Great language learner. Much better than Duolingo. However Duolingo has one thing Busuu doesn’t have. Music support. I could do a lesson in french and listen to some music in the background to focus. However in Busuu whenever I get into a lesson with any voice tracks, the music cuts out. I do really like this app and the structure of the courses but this small flaw makes it annoying to do lessons and listen to music which is something I quite like doing as it focuses me.

I’ve been using Busuu for a couple of years now and I can genuinely say that it is a really good language learning app. I’ve learnt a lot from it, so much so that I bought a membership for a year in 2024 despite the steep price point. However, the ads. The ads are too much. I get it, it’s a free app and you need ads to run it. But it’s at the point now where you finish a lesson, an ad plays (some being very very questionable), and you cannot exit it. It gives you no option. It just continuously opens the app download page. It’s so frustrating. It’s getting to the point where I just don’t recommend it to anyone anymore because it’s too much. Surely there is a better solution with ads where your consumers don’t feel tricked. :/

this app is absolutely fantastic, i’m actually learning important and relevant stuff. the app itself is easy to use and i prefer it infinitely to other language apps but my goodness locking certain lessons behind an ad is just incredibly greedy and insane. it’s watching an ad OR pay for a premium subscription to learn a certain lesson. the incentive to want people to continue using the app and then to have the audacity to put an ad in front of a lesson preventing people from using the app is contradictory and downright shameful. yes apps like this need to make money somehow but the whole POINT of this app is to LEARN through its lessons, which one can’t do without getting some ridiculous mobile game ad shoved down their throat. insane. and yet i’ll still continue to use it because besides that it’s actually such a great and useful app :/

Great app - hate the ads

I used to use Duolingo, but decided to give this app a try and I genuinely love the structure, the explanations, and the way it introduces bigger concepts in small, manageable steps. The learning experience itself is excellent.But the ads are really taking away from that experience. There are ads after every lesson and even when logging in, and they are not just quick 20 second ads. Some run for nearly a full minute. I understand this is a free app and that revenue is needed to provide the service, which I completely respect. However, it feels especially frustrating to sit through gaming ads and then immediately see ads encouraging you to upgrade if you are “tired of distractions.”I would happily pay to remove the ads and continue using the app, but the subscription price is far beyond my budget. Even with the constant promotions offering 75%, 76%, and now 80% off, it still works out to over $120 NZD a year, which feels excessive.I really do love the app, but the volume and length of the ads are making me seriously consider switching to something else, which is disappointing because the actual learning content is so good.
