The family of slain journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi has expressed deep frustration over the lack of visible progress in the long-running investigation into their murder.

Their son Mahir Sarowar Megh and plaintiff Nowsher Roman expressed their concerns after a meeting with Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal and their lawyer Shishir Manir at the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Roman later said, “The absence of updated information on the investigation is fuelling rumours, which has further deepened the family’s mental distress.”

The prosecution says that, with the passage of time, many members of the law-enforcing agencies and officials who had visited the crime scene can no longer be traced.

Roman lamented that the hope for progress in the case during the interim government has not been fulfilled.

“We’ve been seeking justice for more than 14 years. Earlier, we used to get news of progress in the court at least once a month. But now we are being given a hearing date every six months. We have no idea where the investigation stands.

The attorney general said: “The investigating agency is facing some ‘real’ problems. Many law-enforcing officers and officials who went to the scene after the incident cannot be found or contacted.

“It is important to have the necessary documents, evidence and continuity in the investigation of an incident that happened 14 years ago. But the passage of a long time has created complications in collecting information and data.”

According to him, the investigators are trying to collect new information and communicate with those concerned.

He, however, declined to comment on the future of the case or whether the investigation will be successful.

Meanwhile, the plaintiff's lawyer said the current investigation officer of the case has already submitted a report.

Shishir Manir said they will file a petition to see that report when the High Court reopens on Jun 7.

On Feb 11, 2012, the bloody bodies of Maasranga Television's news editor Sagar and ATN Bangla's senior correspondent Runi were recovered from their home in the capital’s West Rajabazar.

The probe report of this case was supposed to be submitted to the court on May 7, but it was not done that day.

As a result, the date of its submission was deferred for the 126th time until Jun 18.
