President Mohammed Shahabuddin has called on everyone to work together to build a “just, democratic, non-communal and prosperous” Bangladesh by upholding the ideals and values of Eid-ul-Azha.
He made the call in a video message on Thursday marking Eid.
Later in the day, the president and his wife Rebecca Sultana exchanged Eid greetings with people from different walks of life at the Bangabhaban.
Shahabuddin said: “Let us embrace unity instead of division, compassion instead of violence, justice instead of selfishness, and equality instead of discrimination by carrying the ideals and values of Eid-ul-Azha in our hearts.”
In his video message, the president conveyed heartfelt greetings to the people of Bangladesh and Muslims around the world.
He said Eid-ul-Azha strengthens mutual brotherhood, sacrifice, harmony and social solidarity among people.
“This festival is an eternal and universal call to sacrifice hatred, arrogance and the beast within.”
In his message, the president urged affluent members of society to share the joy of Eid with poor and underprivileged people, relatives and neighbours, and to ensure their rightful dues.
He also stressed the importance of raising awareness to protect the environment and public health.
Shahabuddin made a special appeal to people to extend full cooperation to the authorities in ensuring the quick disposal of sacrificial animal waste and maintaining cleanliness.
The Eid greetings exchange programme, held at 11:30am, was attended by members of the Cabinet, ambassadors of different countries, senior politicians, judges, writers, journalists, teachers, intellectuals and people from various professions.
According to a Bangabhaban statement, the chief election commissioner, cabinet secretary, chiefs of the three Armed Services, the Bangladesh Bank governor, secretaries to the President’s Office, the inspector general of police and senior civil and military officials were also present at the event.
At 7:30am, the president joined the Eid prayer service at the National Eidgah.
He later exchanged Eid greetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and members of the Cabinet, and greeted others present there.
