The High Court has issued a rule asking why a man named Shahadat Hossain Shyamal, who was “paralysed” in a reported police shooting in Munshiganj seven years ago, should not be given Tk 50 million as compensation.
A bench of Justice Khijir Ahmed Chowdhury and Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury passed the order on Wednesday, asking the home secretary, inspector general of police, Munshiganj district police chief and other relevant respondents to respond within the next four weeks.
The survivor has been ordered to be given Tk 200,000 in damages until the rule is settled.
The writ petitioner Shahinuzzaman told bdnews24.com that the court ordered immediate compensation of Tk 200,000 for the survivor's medical expenses.
The shooting reportedly took place at the Kamrakanda police checkpost in Munshiganj’s Sirajdikhan Upazila on the night of Mar 14, 2019 when Shaymal was returning home on a motorbike with his friends from Dhaka’s Keraniganj.
After that, police sued Shyamal and his friends for “obstructing government duty”.
As the matter received widespread media coverage, a rights group reported the incident to the National Human Rights Commission on Apr 16, 2019.
“Later, in response to a letter from the Commission, the home ministry asked police to re-investigate the matter,” said the lawyer.
The re-investigation, he said, found that police had shot Shyamal.
“Police expressed regret and admitted their mistake, but did not withdraw the case,” said Shahinuzzaman, claiming that the Commission had already written to the home ministry to compensate Shyamal.
