A Bangladeshi expatriate has been killed after a passenger train hit a car in the southern Portuguese city of Algarve.

The victim was identified as Ram Prasad Sarkar, 36, from Mirzapur Upazila in Tangail.

The crash took place on Thursday local time in Mexilhoeira Grande, leaving four other Bangladeshi nationals injured.

According to local media reports, five Bangladeshi nationals were in the car when it was hit by a passenger train at a railway crossing.

The vehicle was badly damaged in the accident and Ram Prasad died at the scene.

Four other Bangladeshi nationals, aged between 31 and 49, were rescued from the wreckage and rushed to hospitals in Portimoo and Faro.

Hospital authorities described the condition of several survivors as “critical”.

Train services between the Portimao and Mexilhoeira Grande stations on the Algarve railway line were temporarily suspended after the crash for safety reasons.

Normal operations resumed several hours later after rescue work wrapped up.

Portuguese authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Their initial findings suggest the car entered the crossing after ignoring warning signals and ended up in front of the train.

Members of the Bangladeshi community in Portugal said Ram Prasad had arrived in the country only 10 to 15 days ago in search of work.

His family has sought assistance from the Bangladesh Embassy in Lisbon to begin the process of sending the body back home.
