A new organisation of editors has started its journey under the leadership of Shafik Rehman, editor of the daily Jai Jai Din, and Mahmudur Rahman, editor of the Daily Amar Desh.

Shafik will serve as the platform’s convenor and Mahmudur as the joint convenor, according to a media statement.

The organisation, called the National Editors’ Council, was announced at a meeting in the Daily Amar Desh office in the capital's Karwan Bazar on Tuesday.

All the remaining members of the 13-strong convening committee, including former interim government chief’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam, are also editors of the print media.

However, it has not been made clear whether this organisation is limited to daily broadsheets only.

The platform says it is intended to protect press freedom, improve the quality of journalism, and protect the professional interests of editors, according to the statement.

The other members also include the Daily Naya Diganta Editor Salahuddin Muhammad Babar, Kaler Kantho Editor Hasan Hafiz, Jugantor Editor Abdul Hye Sikder, Protidiner Bangladesh Editor Maruf Kamal Khan, Sangram Editor Azam Mir Shahidul Ahsan, New Nation Editor Mokarram Hossain and Manobkantha Editor Shahidul Islam.

Shafiqul now edits The Daily Wadaa.
