The Election Commission (EC) has sent letters to 23 political parties, including the ruling BNP and the National Citizen Party, demanding an account of their expenditures in the general election.
The parties have been asked to submit their election expenditure statements by Jun 13, Mohammad Manir Hossain, deputy secretary of the EC's election management wing, said on Tuesday.
In the Feb 12 parliamentary polls, a total of 50 political parties took part.
The official gazette notification of the election results was published on the night of Feb 13.
According to electoral laws, all participating parties are required to submit their expenditure reports within 90 days of the gazette publication.
Accordingly, the initial deadline expired on May 13.
Out of the 50 parties, 27, including the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami, submitted their accounts within the stipulated time.
The remaining 23 parties that missed the deadline have now been issued warning notices by the commission.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said on Sunday that following the expiry of the initial deadline, the commission has extended the timeframe by another month.
Under the RPO, if a political party fails to submit its expenditure report within the initial timeframe, the EC issues a cautionary notice giving them an additional 30 days.
If a party still fails to comply, the commission can grant a further 15 days subject to a fine of Tk 10,000.
Failure to submit the report even within the extended grace period can lead to the cancellation of the party's registration with the EC.
According to the rules, a political party can spend a maximum of Tk 45 million if it fields more than 200 candidates.
The spending limit is Tk 30 million for parties with 100 to 200 candidates, Tk 15 million for 50 to 100 candidates, and a maximum of Tk 7.5 million for parties fielding fewer than 50 candidates.
