Is there a way to connect to a Java RMI server from c++ ( without using a client side JVM )

Look into RMI IIOP in the Java API. It's easy to set up an RMI-IIOP server.

Look into CORBA here: CORBA

I didn't know about RMI IIOP, thanks for the pointer.

I was going to respond to the OP that this sure sounds like what Corba was designed for.
