Using Java for a trailer?

Hi--

I have a 1-minute trailer on my site that is 1.9 MB and gives a pretty poor picture. The
trailer was created using Quicktime Pro with the Sorenson 3 video compression.

I've seen some references to Java in some other trailers and I'd like to find out if I can use
Java for my own trailer. This board is supposed to be for Java beginners, and believe me,
I'm a beginner, if I can actually get started.

How do you want to use Java in your trailer?

in keeping the file size small, so the trailer will load fast, and still have good quality.

If this is not an appropriate task for Java, then I'll have to take another approach.

Do you want to play the trailer using Java? Do you want to create the file using Java? Do you want to stream the file using Java? In what capacity do you want to use Java?

Java is a programming language and execution environment. It can do anything that someone develops for it to run. So the answer is yes to all your questions.

I think you saw someone use Java to stream video, and assume that all they did was set it up on their web page and they were done. They probably bought it or wrote it themselves. I would suggest you contact the web site to see what they did, or get some references.

Thanks for the info. From what you say I presume I would have to buy the Java Program and install it on my Mac before I could use Java. I'd prefer not to learn a new language at this time unless absolutely necessary. I used Apple's Final Cut Express to create the trailer and I used Quicktime Pro to convert the trailer for web page use.

I got the book "Java Programming Fundamentals" from my local library. It's too complicated for me at this time. I want to stick to HTML stuff and I thought that maybe Java might fit easily into this approach.

Apple has a new codec (H246?) that is supposed to be very good for what I want to do. But the codec apparently has some serious bugs at this time so I don't want to use it just yet.

Am I the only one who has absolutely no idea what this thread is about? What has a programming language got to do with producing video? Unless you are referring to some sort of Java Multimedia API, why not get some video authoring software and compress the video (no programming involved)? Seems to me that you are very, very confused.

Thanks for clearing thngs up. I don't know much about Java but I now know that it is not the answer to the vidoe compression problem. I will try to get an answer elsewhere.

This seems to be the best place to clear up my confusion. I took the script excerpt below from a trailer that Apple has up on one of its site. There are several references to javascript. Maybe that is part of what is confusing me.

When I look at this html it looks like the trailer does not load onto my computer but remains on the Apple site. If this is the case, then can I do something similar? I suppose my computer would have to be online continuously for this to work. That would not be practical for me.

If I understand your question/problem.

Java would just be used to display your video. You'd still create it using QuickTime Pro or something similar so it wouldn't really help with your file size or download time. And there are other ways to display your video that you may already be aware of.

Of course someone may have already written video editing software with Java but that woin't change the file size as the video still needs to be saved in a video format.

Javascript and java are 2 completely different animals, that may be part of your confusion. Javascript could also be used to place the video on your page, but again it's not going to change the file size/ download time.
