Beginner Java Question

I'm coming from a front-end web development background, and have fairly good HTML5 skills. I am learning Java for work, and we are using Vaadin as a GUI framework.

If I wanted to code all of my HTML/CSS/JS in my Java applications from scratch without having a big giant framework, what would be the best approach?

It looks like JSP is the lightest and most flexible solution, but no one has written a book on it in 10 years. Do people still use JSP?
