In times of growing geopolitical tension, one question is especially close to my heart: How can we keep dialogue open across religious and cultural lines? 🌐 👉 Every day, we see how religion and identity shape societies, political discourse, and the way conflicts unfold. Too often, however, media coverage focuses on religion mainly in the context of crisis, conflict, and war. This does not reflect the full reality, and it overlooks the dedication of many religious leaders who take on responsibility in their communities to promote peaceful coexistence. That's why I believe we need to put much more light on interfaith dialogue, and on the role journalism can play in strengthening it. Responsible, independent media can create spaces for understanding, amplify diverse voices, and help build bridges where others see divisions. This is exactly what we will explore at the DW Global Media Forum 2026 in the session "Beyond coexistence: The media's role in interfaith dialogue." I am truly grateful that three outstanding personalities will share their perspectives with us: ➡️ Sally Azar, Pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land ➡️ Dzevada Garic, Political Science Professor at the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology ➡️ Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis 🎤 DW Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar will host this important conversation 🙏 I warmly invite you to join us on June 23 and 24 at the Global Media Forum in Bonn. I very much look forward to the exchange and to meeting many of you there. More on the session ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dAMafZks

Sunday night's extensive attacks on Kyiv also affected DW: the shock waves damaged windows and ceilings of the DW bureau. DW journalists were not harmed. "Even though Kyiv is increasingly exposed to Russian aerial attacks, the motivation of DW journalists on the ground remains undiminished. They know that their work is more important than ever, especially in times like these," said Mykola Berdnyk, Head of the DW bureau in Kyiv. More in our press release ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dSmSinSZ

Once again, Kyiv was a target of a large-scale Russian attack overnight. According to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, "it was a heavy attack– 90 missiles of various types, many of them ballistic – 36, and 600 drones." There are many casualties. Kyiv’s Mayor Klitschko reported damage "in every district of the city." Our office was damaged too — as were reportedly bureaus of other media outlets, for instance that of WDR. Fortunately, our colleagues are ok. I have immense respect for Mykola Berdnyk and our team on the ground and their commitment to continuing reporting. #kyiv #freedomofpress #journalismmatters

Turkey: DW journalist Alican Uludağ to be released from pre-trial detention A court in Ankara has made the decision to release DW journalist Alican Uludağ after three months in pre-trial detention. Charges, including insulting the president and spreading misleading information, remain in place. The trial is set to continue on September 18. DW Director General Barbara Massing: "I am very relieved that our colleague Alican Uludağ is finally being released after three months and can return to his family in Ankara. He spent 92 days in detention without justification, mostly in solitary confinement in the high-security Silivri prison in Istanbul, far from home. It is troubling that the trial will continue, and we call for the charges to be dropped immediately." ℹ️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/drS-WDG7

#DWAmbassador

Come join us at DW 👋 Every role at DW has a story behind it—and often that story begins long before anyone sets foot in the newsroom. At DW headquarters in Berlin, we spoke with some of our colleagues about their career paths: what they studied, how they got started, and where that journey has taken them today. Some studied media-related subjects; others have gained practical experience through apprenticeships – but each brings a unique perspective and experience to the table. This is a glimpse into the people behind the work and how different paths come together at DW 🌍

Bigger, bolder and more urgent: JaafarTalk is back for Season Two! ✨ One year after DW's Arabic-language multimedia show JaafarTalk with host Jaafar Abdul Karim introduced its three sub-formats "Step by Step", "Open Up" and "It's My Secret", the show continues to actively drive innovation and spark dialogue with its growing community. DW awards the Freedom of Speech Award 2026 to Jimmy Lai. For decades, the Hong Kong media entrepreneur has stood up for press freedom and democracy, even as space for independent journalism became increasingly limited. As the founder of Apple Daily, Jimmy Lai gave journalists a platform for free reporting and a voice to Hong Kong's democracy movement. Since 2020, Jimmy Lai has been detained, much of the time in solitary confinement. In early 2026, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison under Hong Kong's national security law. His case has come to symbolize a broader crackdown on media freedom and dissent. "Jimmy Lai has stood unwaveringly for press freedom in Hong Kong at great personal risk. His commitment reminds us that press freedom is never a given – it must be constantly defended," says DW Director General Barbara Massing. The DW Freedom of Speech Award will be presented on June 23, 2026, at the DW Global Media Forum in Bonn. "People who fight for freedom are never alone," says Jimmy Lai's son Sebastien, a message this award seeks to underline. ℹ️ Our press release: https://lnkd.in/dBm4KNjc #FreedomOfSpeechAward #JimmyLai #GMF26 #JournalismOutLoud
