Furthermore, there is the option of hosting bzr branches on
code.python.org, for committers, right? (not sure whether any committer
makes active use of this service, though)

Indeed. Before, I was worried about disk space. Now that we got a new
machine, with plenty disk, RAM, CPU, we can offer hosting whatever
people want to see - as you say, we would need a volunteer maintainer
of such a service, though.
