A tribunal in Dhaka on Thursday set June 7 for delivering its verdict in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old child Ramisa Akter in the capital's Pallabi area.

Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Children's Violence Suppression Tribunal fixed the date after hearing.

Special Public Prosecutor Azizur Rahman Dulu told the court that witness testimonies, seized evidence and other materials had proved the charges against accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Khatun beyond reasonable doubt.

He sought the death penalty for both.

Defence counsel Musa Kalimullah pleaded for justice on behalf of the accused, while lawyers representing the victim’s family also presented arguments.

Earlier, during self-defence statements, Swapna claimed innocence, while Sohel sought acquittal despite having given a confessional statement.

Ramisa’s body was recovered from a flat in Pallabi on May 19. Police alleged that neighbour Sohel Rana raped and killed the child before fleeing the scene, while his wife was present in the apartment. Both were later arrested and charged in the case.
