Power division calls for revision of lifeline electricity tariff

Power Division has requested Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) to reconsider the recently re-fixed electricity tariff, expressing concern over its potential impact on lifeline consumers and low-income households.

In a letter sent to BERC, the Power Division urged a review of the tariff structure for marginal consumers in line with a proposal submitted by the Bangladesh Power Development Board on May 3, 2026.

A ministry spokesperson said the division expects the regulator to take necessary steps in this regard soon.

The BERC had recently revised wholesale (bulk), transmission and retail electricity tariffs for different categories of consumers following a public hearing held on May 20-21, 2026, under Sections 22(b) and 34 of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003.

However, according to the Power Division, the revised tariff did not adequately reflect the proposed rates for lifeline consumers.

Officials said the new tariff structure could increase expenditure for marginal users, particularly low-income and lower-middle-income families, potentially affecting their living standards.

The Power Division also said the government has been taking various initiatives to improve the quality of life of lower-income groups, and the revised tariff for lifeline consumers is not aligned with that policy approach.
