please post your code. Since the error is showing under two separate execution methods the error is probably in the code.

Error is from Pillow imaging extension.
Pillow C‐extension isn’t matching your interpreter(Python version).
Wrong or multiple conflicting installs of PIL/Pillow,or often it can be shadowing problem.
This mean that you have eg named some files maging.py, PIL.py, etc(check for this first).

Reinstall would be.

pip uninstall PIL pillow pypiwin32 pywin32
# install 
pip install --no-cache-dir pillow

Test in REPL.

In an old thread here there was the same question, convert xls to xlsx. However, the xls file did not contain any images.

I just read the xls file in using xlrd. You can then use that directly in openpyxl and save as .xlsx. You just have to deal with the different sheets. Not sure how that handles formulas either. The sample xls did not have any formulas, as far as I recall.

Post an example xls file, then we can try to achieve what you want to do.
