I Rebuilt My Website in a Day (And You Can Too)

Presented a session for Data Platform WIT showing how AI coding assistants were used from the terminal and VS Code to rebuild dbatools.io in a single day. Demonstrated how AI helped rewrite websites, batch-update over 100 blog posts, repair broken links, modernize deprecated code, convert screenshots to text, and refactor T-SQL for case-sensitive servers, along with practical workflows using GitHub CLI for command-line driven site maintenance.

Rebuilding dbatools.io: From Notepad++ to Cursor

Back in 2016, dbatools.io was modeled after Notepad++: clean, polished, something that looked like a commercial product even though it was open source. It did its job: helped people discover dbatools. But over time, the project outgrew the site. Users didn’t need marketing; they needed commands, docs, and real examples. So in 2025, I tore it all down and rebuilt it in a single day with Claude Haiku and PowerShell. The new site is developer-first: real commands, real demos, and real stories from the community. From Notepad++ aesthetics to Cursor-style practicality. This rebuild is about what open source looks like when it's quite mature.
