Bangladesh’s international master Mohammad Fahad Rahman secured his second Grandmaster norm when he won the FUBY Academy Norm Chess Tournament Series-3 Grandmaster title in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday.
Fahad drew against Georgian IM Gaioz Nigalidze in the ninth and final round after beating Iranian IM Pour Agha Bala Amirreza in the eighth round to win the title with seven points alongside securing a nine-game Grandmaster norm.
Fahad now has two GM norms of 18 games. He need to secure one nine-game GM norm more and to raise his FIDE rating points to 2500 from 2424 to become country’s sixth GM.
The 22-year-old, Fahad earned his first GM norm in the Hanoi Grandmasters Chess Tournament in Vietnam in March 2024.
A total of a total 10 players - three GMs, four IMs, two FM, one CM – from six countries - Bangladesh, Georgia, Hungary, Iran, Poland, Turkey took part in the round-robin league format event in Istanbul.
However, five Bangladesh players – Niaz Murshed (1987), late Ziaur Rahman (2002), Reefat Bin-Sattar (2005), Abdullah Al Rakib (2007)and Enamul Hossain Rajib (2008) so far achieved Grandmaster titles.
