The Chattogram Metropolitan Violence against Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the rape of a four-year-old girl in the Chairman Ghata area of Bakalia.
Judge Syeda Hafsa Jhuma delivered the verdict against the convict, Monir Hossain, at around 2:00pm.
Tribunal public prosecutor Mahmud-ul Alam Chowdhury Maruf said the court found the charge against Monir proved beyond reasonable doubt.
‘The tribunal sentenced Monir Hossain to life imprisonment and fined him Tk 50,000,’ he said.
The public prosecutor noted that the verdict was delivered within eight working days of the commencement of the trial and just 26 days after the incident occurred.
Monir was present in the dock when the verdict was pronounced. Following the judgment, the tribunal ordered that he be sent to prison.
The trial was completed within eight working days, including the recording of testimonies, the self-defence statement of the accused, and closing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence. The tribunal recorded the testimonies of 18 prosecution witnesses during the proceedings.
According to the case documents, the four-year-old girl was raped inside a warehouse near Balur Math in the Nur Hossain Chairman Ghata area of Bakalia on May 21.
The victim’s father filed a case with Bakalia police station, and the police subsequently submitted a charge sheet naming Monir Hossain as the sole accused.
