Renowned Gono Sangeet singer, composer, lyricist, and music teacher Kamruddin Absar died on Saturday.
He was 71.
He breathed his last at about 9:30 pm while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. He is survived by his wife and son.
His body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar on Monday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, his funeral prayers will be held at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University after Zuhr prayer.
According to a press release, Absar had been battling various health complications for years. After suffering a stroke in 2011, he was receiving ongoing medical care at home. His health severely deteriorated recently after he contracted pneumonia and influenza, leading to his hospitalisation on May 14.
Absar learned music from Ustad Gul Mohammad Khan, Ustad Munshi Raisuddin, and Altaf Mahmud. He worked as an assistant in the music and direction department of the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation. He was involved with various cultural organisations and people’s movements through Gono Sangeet, including Bangladesh Lekhak Shibir, Kranti, and Sanskriti Mancha. He also formed the musical troupe Srijan.
May Dibosher Gaan and Banglar Comrade Bondhu were his notable music albums. He received the Samageet Hemanga Biswas Sammanona in 2012.
Various political and cultural organisations, including the Workers Party of Bangladesh, the Biplobi Communist League, and Ganatantrik Sanskritik Oikya, among others, expressed grief over his death.
