House of the Dragon season 3 stars gathered in London for world premiere
With a fourth season already confirmed, HBO celebrated the world premiere of "House of the Dragon" season three in London, building momentum ahead of its highly anticipated television return on 21 June.
The glitzy premiere event brought together the sprawling ensemble cast that anchors the fantasy drama. Familiar faces walking the carpet included Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, and Tom Glynn-Carney. They are joined this season by a massive returning roster, including Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.
Audiences anticipating the new season are in for an extended return to Westeros. According to HBO's official broadcast schedule, the premiere episode will run for a staggering 72 minutes. This marks the longest season opener in the series' history, easily surpassing the 65-minute debut of season one and the 58-minute opener of season two.
Industry reports and comments from showrunner Ryan Condal suggest the expanded runtime is necessary to accommodate one of the most brutal conflicts in author George RR Martin's lore: the Battle of the Gullet. The brewing political and familial tensions from the end of the second season are expected to immediately boil over into this large-scale naval clash, setting a violent tone for the rest of the eight-episode run.
Based on Martin's novel "Fire & Blood", the hit prequel series is set roughly 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones". It chronicles the devastating war of succession within House Targaryen, famously known as the Dance of the Dragons. With the war between the Black and Green factions now escalating to unprecedented levels, the show's early renewal for a fourth season ensures the bloody conflict is far from over.
