CU student drowns in Kaptai Lake

A 22-year-old Chittagong University student died after drowning in Kaptai Lake in Rangamati this evening.

The victim, Intishar Hasnat, was from Cox's Bazar, said police.

The incident happened around 5:00pm in the Baluchar area of Rangamati Sadar upazila.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Hasnat went on a boat trip with four friends. The group got off the boat near Chakrapara to go for a swim. While swimming, Hasnat went deeper into the lake and drowned.

A diving unit from Rangamati Fire Station rushed to the scene and rescued him from a depth of 25 feet after searching for an hour. He was taken to Rangamati General Hospital in an ambulance, where doctors declared him dead.

Newton Das, assistant director of the Rangamati Fire Service and Civil Defence office, said, “We received the news of a tourist going missing around 5:00pm. He was rescued after about an hour of rescue work. Later, when he was taken to the hospital, the doctor on duty declared him dead. The body has been handed over to police.”
