The holy month of Muharram has begun as the crescent moon of 1448 Hijri was sighted in Bangladesh on Tuesday evening. Accordingly, the country will observe Ashura on Friday, June 26.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka on Tuesday evening.
The committee reviewed reports from district administrations, Islamic Foundation offices, Bangladesh Meteorological Department and Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation before confirming the sighting of the Muharram moon.
Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, holds great religious significance for Muslims around the world. The day is remembered for several important events in Islamic tradition, including the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SA), and members of his family and followers at Karbala.
The day is observed in Bangladesh with religious activities and due respect by Muslim communities across the country.
