A Jamalpur court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for burning his wife to death over dowry demands.

Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict, sentencing Alal Sek, 53, to death and fining him Tk 5 lakh in the case.

Alal Sek, son of Mojor Uddin of South Rahimpur village under Dewanganj upazila, was tried in absentia as he has been absconding.

According to the prosecution, Alal Sek assaulted his wife Naiful Begum over dowry demands sometime between the night of May 26 and the morning of May 27 in 2008. He later set her on fire, causing her death.

The victim's father, Abdul Khaleque, filed a case with the court on June 5, 2008.

After recording statements from nine witnesses, the court delivered the verdict on Wednesday. No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the trial, said the prosecution.
