A Chattogram court on Wednesday sentenced Md Abir for killing five-year-old Alina Islam Ayat and later, severing her body into six pieces.
Sixth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas delivered the judgement in presence of prime accused Abir.
The court also fined the convict Tk 100,000.
Mohammad Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, Assistant Public Prosecutor of the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, stated that after reviewing the accused Abir Ali's confessional statement, the inquest report, the post-mortem report, the recovered evidence and the testimonies of witnesses, the court found that the charges against the accused had been proven beyond reasonable doubt. Consequently, the court sentenced the accused to the maximum punishment, the death penalty.
According to the case statement, Alina, the daughter Sohel Rana, a resident of the port city's EPZ Thana, was killed on November 14, 2022. Her body was later chopped up and thrown into the sea, which sparked nationwide outrage.
An investigation found that Alina was killed by her neighbour Abir.
Public Prosecutor Jalal Uddin said 33 witnesses testified in the case.
