Iranian Ambassador meets Opposition Leader

DHAKA, June 17, 2026 (BSS)- Ambassador of Iran to Bangladesh Dr. Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi made a courtesy call on Leader of the Opposition  and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman today at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Iranian Embassy First Counsellor Esrafil Amiri Gorzaddini, Cultural Counsellor Mahdi Molars accompanied the ambassador.

According to a press release, the meeting was conducted in a warm and cordial atmosphere with discussions focusing on the longstanding friendly and brotherly relation between Bangladesh and Iran, as well as prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, education and cultural exchanges, healthcare, and other issues important to Muslim Ummah

Iranian ambassador congratulated Dr. Shafiqur Rahman for being the Leader of the Opposition following the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and praised Jamaat-e-Islami for its ideological and intellectual contributions to politics.

During the meeting, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed his condolences and sympathy for all Iranian citizens who lost their lives in the recent war. He also conveyed grief over the extensive human and material losses caused by the conflict and prayed for eternal peace for the deceased.

The opposition leader thanked Iran for signing a peace agreement aimed at expediting a ceasefire and appreciated Tehran’s constructive role in advancing peace efforts. 

He expressed hope that the agreement would remain effective and contribute to regional stability.  He also expressed his optimism that Iran would continue to strengthen relations with neighbouring Muslim countries and that Bangladesh-Iran ties would become more prosperous and robust in the future.

They also discussed on formation of a Parliamentary Friendship Group, introduction of Dhaka-Tehran direct flight and cooperation to develop medical tourism. 

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman proposed for establishing a world-class hospital in Bangladesh with support from the Iranian government.

The Iranian ambassador highly appreciated the existing friendly relations between the two countries and expressed Iran’s interest in elevating bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in trade, education, culture and people-to-people contact. 

He also reiterated the Iranian government’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Bangladesh across various sectors, including development.

Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Opposition Leader Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP, and member of the Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee Ali Ahmad Mabrur were present.
