Rapid waste removal DSCC's top priority: Administrator
DHAKA, Jun 17, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md. Abdus Salam said rapid waste removal is currently the corporation's top priority as mosquito control activities continue. He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a programme held at Nagar Bhaban auditorium today, where the Prime Minister's special Eid-ul-Azha grant was distributed among sanitation workers.  A total of 4,950 DSCC sanitation workers received Tk 5,000 each. He highlighted that sanitation workers perform some of the most difficult duties in the city corporation and expressed hope that, with continued public awareness and their efforts, Dhaka's appearance could be significantly improved within the next two years.  He also called on media workers to support awareness-building alongside sanitation staff. The administrator raised concerns about household waste management under the current ward-based tender system, noting irregular waste collection in some areas and allegations of extra charges.  He said the system's continuation is under review and a new approach may be introduced if service quality does not improve. He thanked sanitation workers for their effective waste removal during Eid-ul-Azha, which helped keep the city free from foul odors.  He also mentioned ongoing initiatives to improve their welfare, including housing projects and expanding health card coverage from 1,000 to 6,000 workers. DSCC also plans to support sanitation workers' children in higher education to prevent financial hardship. He emphasized that keeping Dhaka clean requires joint responsibility between authorities and citizens.

Trump threatens 'dropping bombs' if Iran doesn't 'behave'
EVIAN, France, June 17, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned Iran he was ready to resume military action if Tehran did not abide by its obligations, two days ahead of the signing of an accord to end the war between the foes. "If they (the Iranian side) don't behave, we'll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head," Trump said at the G7 summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

BB clarifies NPL figures, rejects misleading 'distressed loan' calculations
BB clarifies NPL figures, rejects misleading 'distressed loan' calculations
DHAKA, June 17, 2023 (BSS) - Bangladesh Bank (BB) today clarified its  position on the banking sector's non-performing loans (NPLs), rejecting media  reports that claimed the country's distressed loan ratio ranged between 45  percent and 60 percent. In a press release , the central bank said such figures were based on  technically flawed calculations and did not reflect the actual condition of  the banking sector as presented in its annual Financial Stability Report  (FSR) 2025. According to the report, the official NPL ratio of the country's banking  sector stood at 10.10 percent as of December 31, 2025.  Bangladesh Bank said this audited and finalized figure remains the  authoritative measure of the sector's non-performing assets. The central bank noted that some media reports had calculated so-called  distressed loans by adding together classified or non-performing loans,  rescheduled loans and written-off loans.  It described this method as an inappropriate and technically incorrect  approach that led to inflated figures. Bangladesh Bank further stated that there is no internationally recognized or  standardized definition of "distressed loans" among global regulatory and  policy-making institutions.  While the term is often used to describe loans that are not generating income  or are not being serviced regularly, the aggregate calculation used in the  reports does not conform to accepted regulatory or accounting practices. Explaining its position, the central bank said rescheduled loans cannot be  considered distressed because borrowers continue to make repayments under  approved restructuring arrangements.  These loans remain active assets that generate cash flow for banks. It also noted that written-off loans are maintained off-balance sheet in line  with international practices and therefore cannot be added to active loan  portfolios when assessing the current condition of the banking sector. Bangladesh Bank warned that publication of unverified and technically  inaccurate financial data could create negative perceptions about the  country's financial stability among domestic and international stakeholders,  potentially affecting confidence in the economy. The central bank urged media organisations to exercise greater caution in  reporting financial sector data and to verify information with official  sources to ensure accuracy and maintain public and investor confidence.
