The Election Commission (EC) has finalised a comprehensive roadmap ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election.

Following approval of the work plan in a commission meeting, the roadmap may be formally unveiled on Thursday.

According to EC officials, the roadmap outlines timelines for every essential step required to hold the polls.

These include legal amendments, redrawing of parliamentary constituencies, registration of new political parties and election observers, updating the voter list, finalising polling centres, and recruitment and training of election officials.

It also specifies deadlines for procurement of election materials and printing of ballots and envelopes.

However, the election schedule or polling date will not be included in this roadmap.

Speaking to reporters at the EC media centre on Wednesday, Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed that the work plan had been approved and said details would be disclosed on Thursday.

EC sources further said that a series of discussions with stakeholders will begin in September.

If all goes as planned, the election schedule is expected to be announced in December, with the national election likely to be held by early February next year.

Officials believe that publication of this roadmap will ease much of the uncertainty and speculation surrounding the polls.
