In a hidden valley beyond the silver mountains, there was a tiny village called Willowbrook. The people there lived simple and cheerful lives. They grew bright flowers, baked warm bread, and told stories under the stars every evening. But the most unusual thing about Willowbrook was the old clock tower standing at the center of the village.
The tower was taller than any tree, and its golden clock hands never stopped moving. Nobody knew who had built it. The villagers only knew one strange fact: every hundred years, the clock chimed thirteen times instead of twelve.
Most people ignored the story, believing it was only an old legend. But a curious twelve-year-old girl named Lina believed every word. She loved mysteries more than anything else. Lina spent her days reading dusty books in the village library and exploring the nearby forests with her best friend, Theo.
One autumn evening, the wind blew fiercely across Willowbrook. Leaves swirled through the streets like dancing birds. Lina and Theo were sitting near the fountain when the clock tower suddenly began to glow with a pale blue light.
The first chime echoed across the village. The villagers froze in surprise as the tower continued ringing again and again. By the time the thirteenth chime sounded, the entire village had fallen silent. Then something extraordinary happened. A small hidden door appeared at the bottom of the clock tower.
Lina grabbed Theo's arm and whispered excitedly that they should see what was inside. The two friends hurried toward the tower before anyone could stop them. The hidden door creaked open slowly, revealing a spiral staircase leading deep underground.
The air smelled of old paper and rain. Tiny glowing insects floated through the darkness like stars. Lina held a lantern while Theo nervously followed behind her. After many steps, they reached a giant underground room filled with clocks of every shape and size.
At the center of the room stood an old man wearing a dark green coat covered in silver gears. He calmly told them they were late for "the choosing." Lina and Theo exchanged confused looks as the old man pointed toward a crystal clock floating in the air.
The old man explained that the crystal clock protected the balance of time in Willowbrook. Every hundred years, someone brave had to become its guardian. Without a guardian, strange and dangerous things would happen to the village.
Before Lina could ask another question, the ground suddenly shook. Several clocks began spinning wildly, and sparks flew through the room. A dark shadow with glowing red eyes appeared from the smoke and moved toward the crystal clock.
Theo trembled with fear while the old man warned them that the creature was the Keeper of Lost Hours. It grew stronger whenever time became unbalanced. The shadow creature rushed closer to the crystal clock with a terrible screech.
Without hesitation, Lina grabbed a silver key hanging beside the old man's desk. She ran toward the crystal clock while Theo distracted the creature by waving the lantern. Lina noticed a tiny keyhole beneath the clock and quickly placed the silver key inside.
The moment she turned the key, golden light burst across the chamber. Every clock began chiming together beautifully. The shadow creature cried out as the bright light surrounded it, making it smaller and smaller until it disappeared completely.
The room became peaceful once again. The crystal clock glowed softly, and the old man smiled proudly at Lina and Theo. He thanked them for saving the balance of time and protecting Willowbrook from danger.
As the sun began to rise, the two friends climbed back to the village. The hidden door vanished behind them, and the clock tower looked normal once more. The villagers never discovered the secret hidden beneath their streets, but Lina and Theo would always remember the magical adventure they shared together.
