DHAKA, June 17, 2026 (BSS) - Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury today handed over a cheque of TK  3,00,000 financial assistance to Laily Baul at his office here in recognition for her exceptional talent and to support her artistic journey.  Recently her soulful voice captivated audiences across social media which came to knowledge of the ministry, said an official handout. On the occasion, Laily performed traditional Baul and folk songs on the occasion.   Captivated by the authentic melodies and her powerful rendition, the minister highly praised her talent, stating that true talents are resilient as they manifest themselves by overcoming all adversities, much like our National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.  “Our indigenous culture and Baul songs are the soul of this nation. It is our core responsibility to recognize such hidden talents from marginal communities and stand beside them,” said the minister. Secretary of the Ministry Kaniz Moula along with senior officials from the ministry and representatives from the media were present at the event.  The ministry continues to dedicatedly work towards the welfare of the nation’s art, culture, and artists and remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting grassroots folk artists who preserve the rich heritage of Bengali folk music, said the handout.

Freedom of expression 'shrinking dangerously': UN expert
Freedom of expression 'shrinking dangerously': UN expert
GENEVA, June 17, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The space for freedom of expression is shrinking dramatically as many countries, abetted by new technologies and digital giants, suppress dissent and as artificial intelligence runs "amok", a UN expert warned Wednesday. The United Nations special rapporteur on the freedom of opinion and expression highlighted that the ongoing conflation of state and corporate interests was weakening that freedom. "Freedom of opinion and expression, a fundamental inalienable human right, has been privatised, monetised, manipulated, and unlawfully restricted," the independent expert warned. Delivering her final report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Kahn called out Washington's efforts to impact how other countries regulate AI and tech giants. "Protecting freedom of expression requires States to uphold human rights," she said. But "when the world's most powerful government asserts its political and economic weapons, from tariffs to sanctions, to dissuade other states from regulating its digital platforms and AI companies, then freedom of expression becomes fodder for geopolitics, a commodity for trade." Kahn and other special rapporteurs are mandated by the rights council, but do not speak on behalf of the United Nations. She said that while the digital age had been "transformative", it had come "at significant social cost,... (borne) by women threatened by online violence (and) children whose health and safety are endangered online". Others feeling the pinch, she said, were "journalists whose livelihoods are destroyed by platforms who refuse to share value, and the public whose capacity to form independent opinions is degraded by information environments polluted by hate and lies". And AI, she said, was "running amok". "From the highly political to the deeply personal, nothing is out of bounds for new technologies," she said, warning that "innovation at speed with no guardrails is a recipe for disaster". Kahn also expressed grave concern about the "staggering asymmetry of state and corporate power". "The reach, resources, and influence of large platforms far outstrip that of most governments," she pointed out. "Major decisions impacting the rights of billions of people are being made by a handful of Big Tech companies and oligarchs, who are accountable to no democratic process, subject to no meaningful oversight, and often face no consequences for their harmful actions." More broadly, Kahn slammed backsliding on human rights by a number of countries, highlighting how populist leaders were "weaponising freedom of expression to incite violence, discrimination and hostilities" against minorities. And even liberal governments, she warned, were increasingly "using counterterrorism and other criminal laws to suppress dissenting voices and peaceful protests".

Bangladesh poised to become leading global investment hub: Titumir
Bangladesh poised to become leading global investment hub: Titumir
DHAKA, June 17, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister's Adviser on the ministries of Finance and Planning Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir today said Bangladesh has the potential to emerge as the world's next major investment destination, adding that the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 has laid the groundwork for achieving that goal. "Vietnam was yesterday's success story, Indonesia is today's reality and Bangladesh can be the most promising investment destination of tomorrow. Policy continuity, energy security, skilled human resources and effective implementation would be a key to attracting investment," he said. The adviser made the remarks while speaking at a discussion on the proposed budget jointly organized by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the Policy Research Institute (PRI) at Police Plaza in the city. Titumir outlined five priority areas for boosting investment, including policy continuity, ease of doing business, industrial financing, energy security and infrastructure development. He said the government has introduced a five-year tax policy framework for the first time to help investors make long-term plans with greater certainty.  Efforts are also underway to simplify regulatory procedures and reduce bureaucratic hurdles to create a more business-friendly environment, he added. To support industrial growth, the government has announced a Tk 60,000 crore financing programme, which he said would be performance-based rather than distributed indiscriminately as in the past. On energy security, Dr. Titumir said the government is working to diversify energy sources, increase gas supply, build strategic reserves and expand the use of renewable energy and LNG to ensure uninterrupted power supply for industries. He also stressed the need for an integrated multimodal transport system, particularly stronger rail connectivity between the eastern and western regions of the country, to reduce transportation costs for agricultural and industrial products. Highlighting the importance of human capital, the adviser said investment benefits could only be fully realised through education, skills development, innovation and civic values. In the health sector, he announced plans to establish a national health system through the recruitment of 5,000 doctors and 100,000 health workers, alongside the expansion of upazila hospitals from 50 to 100 beds. Dr. Titumir also emphasised the need for a universal social safety net to protect citizens throughout their lives amid growing global uncertainties. On revenue management, he said the government would focus on increasing revenue collection by curbing tax evasion, reducing unnecessary exemptions and preventing fraud.  He also pledged reforms in project planning, implementation and evaluation to improve transparency and prevent delays. The adviser said the government values constructive criticism and remains committed to ensuring accountability in budget implementation with support from the business community. Among others, MCCI President Kamran T. Rahman, PRI Chairman Dr. Zaidi Sattar, economist Dr. Bazlul H. Khondker and Standard Chartered Bangladesh CEO Naser Ezaz Bijoy also spoke at the discussion.

Seminar on economic census report held in Khulna
KHULNA, June 17, 2026 (BSS) - A seminar on the publication of the Economic Census 2024 report, conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), was held this afternoon at the conference room of the Khulna Divisional Commissioner's Office. Addressing the seminar as the chief guest, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdullah Harun said the Economic Census is an important document that supports government policy formulation. He noted that the census findings reflect a significant transformation in Bangladesh's rural economy. However, he observed that women's participation and advancement in business activities have not progressed as expected and stressed the need for further efforts in this area. The divisional commissioner also said that service sectors are being prioritised globally and emphasised the importance of developing a skilled, educated and talented workforce to strengthen the sector in Bangladesh. Acting Joint Director of the Khulna Divisional Statistics Office Md Abdul Alim presided over the seminar. The census data showed that the number of economic units in the country rose to 1.17 crore in 2024 from 78.2 lakh in 2013, registering an increase of 49.68 percent over the period. In Khulna division, the number of economic units reached 14.89 lakh in 2024, including 707,676 permanent units, 61,868 temporary units and 719,901 household-based economic units.
