Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has emphasized the importance of expanding sports, cultural activities, and innovation-based competitions to protect the country's youth and future generations from the devastating impact of drug abuse.

He said that engaging young people in positive and productive activities can significantly help prevent the spread of drug addiction.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (June 16) during an exchange of views with journalists at the China Friendship Conference Center in the capital.

The Prime Minister said that although drug abuse is a global problem, its prevalence in the country remains a matter of concern. He noted that arresting addicts or providing treatment and counseling alone cannot offer a lasting solution. Instead, alternative and long-term social initiatives are needed to address the issue effectively.

He said that young people between the ages of 15 and 25 possess tremendous physical and mental energy. To channel that energy in the right direction, opportunities for sports and cultural activities must be expanded. However, he pointed out that the shortage of playgrounds in Dhaka and many other parts of the country remains a major obstacle.

Highlighting various government initiatives aimed at engaging young people, Tarique Rahman said that the “Notun Kuri” sports and cultural competition program has already been launched. He added that nearly 2.2 million students recently participated in an event organized by the education sector. Such programs, involving children from families of all political and social backgrounds, will be expanded further.

Alongside sports, the Prime Minister stressed the need to nurture young talent in science and technology through regular science fairs and innovation competitions at district and divisional levels. He also called for year-round cultural programs, debate competitions, and other creative activities in educational institutions.

Referring to the need to prevent moral degradation among young people and promote social values, the Prime Minister said that some worrying trends of violence and intolerance have emerged in society. To address these challenges, he emphasized strengthening the practice of social and religious values from the school level. He also informed journalists that the Ministry of Information has been directed to carry out awareness campaigns on the issue.

During the discussion, the Prime Minister also answered questions from journalists regarding the government’s economic reform agenda, efforts to strengthen the rural economy, and the objectives of the proposed “Family Card” and “Farmers Card” initiatives.

The event was attended by the Minister of Information, senior government officials, and veteran journalists from various media outlets.
