Domestic workers and labour rights activists on Tuesday called for stronger legal protection, fair wages and full recognition of domestic workers as workers, marking International Domestic Workers Day 2026 through rallies, human chains and discussions in Dhaka.

A consultation titled “Strengthening Protection and Labour Rights of Domestic Workers in Bangladesh” was organized at the National Press Club by the Bangladesh Nari Sramik Kendra (BNSK) and the Domestic Workers Rights Network (DWRN). Earlier, participants formed a human chain in front of the Press Club demanding recognition of domestic workers as workers, safe working conditions, fair wages, social protection and legal safeguards.

Speaking at the consultation, labour leaders and rights activists said domestic workers continue to play a vital role in the country's labour market but remain deprived of adequate legal protection and social recognition. They stressed the need to amend labour regulations in line with the Domestic Workers Protection and Welfare Policy 2015 and international labour standards.
