AI company Anthropic has suspended access to its newly released AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, following a US government directive citing national security concerns. The move came just days after Fable 5 was made publicly available.
In a statement, Anthropic said the US government ordered the company to restrict access to the two models for all foreign nationals, including non-US employees. As a result, the company disabled both models for all users worldwide to ensure compliance with the directive.
"The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance," Anthropic said.
According to the company, the government did not provide detailed information about the specific security threat. However, Anthropic said it believes officials were concerned about a potential method of "jailbreaking" Fable 5, allowing users to bypass built-in safety restrictions.
Anthropic disputed the severity of the alleged vulnerability, saying its review found only a small number of previously known and relatively minor weaknesses. The company added that similar vulnerabilities could also be identified using other publicly available AI models.
Fable 5 is the first public version of Anthropic's more powerful Mythos 5 model, which was initially released to a limited group of organizations for testing due to concerns about its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. Before its public launch, Anthropic described the technology as exceptionally powerful and equipped with extensive safeguards designed to prevent misuse.
The suspension marks a significant escalation in the growing debate over AI safety and regulation in the United States. It also comes amid ongoing tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration over the company's AI products and their use by government agencies.
Anthropic is currently involved in legal disputes related to government restrictions on its technology. Despite the latest suspension, the company said access to its other AI models remains unaffected.
