Equity Securities

Equity security means any financial instrument representing ownership interest or the potential to obtain such ownership in a company. Holders of equity securities are called shareholders or stockholders and they have a claim on a portion of the company's assets and earnings.

Equity securities provide benefits in the following ways:

• Dividends - Dividend is a share of the company's profits, if declared. The company can declare the dividend in the form of cash and/or stock.
• Capital gains - gain from sale of securities.

Equity securities do not guarantee fixed returns but they offer the potential for higher rewards if the company performs well.
