The Bangladesh Elevator, Escalator and Lift Importers Association (BEELIA) on Wednesday called upon the government to reclassify elevators and escalators as Capital Machinery and rationalize the existing duty structure to ensure sustainable growth of the country’s housing, industrial, and infrastructure sectors. Speaking at a press conference held in the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), BEELIA President Md. Shafiul Alam Uzzwal stated that elevators are no longer luxury items in the context of modern urbanization, high-rise construction, industrialization, and inclusive infrastructure development. Rather, they are essential capital equipment that support economic growth and public accessibility. He noted that elevators were removed from the Capital Machinery category in 2023 and subsequently classified as commercial products. Since then, import duties have increased consecutively in the fiscal years 2024 and 2025. As a result, the total duty burden on elevator imports has risen from approximately 11% in FY2023 to nearly 46% in FY2025. This significant increase has raised construction costs across various sectors, particularly the housing industry, forcing many elevator companies to scale down operations and resulting in substantial job losses. The recommendations were also presented during a press conference organized by the association, where industry leaders highlighted a number of challenges facing elevator importers, manufacturers, and consumers. Among its key proposals, BEELIA urged the government to reclassify elevators and escalators as capital machinery, arguing that such a move would facilitate investment and help modernize the country's infrastructure. The association also called for reducing the load factor value used in customs assessment from USD 3.00 per kilogram to USD 1.50 per kilogram, saying the current rate significantly increases import costs. To protect legitimate businesses and ensure fair competition, BEELIA recommended stronger monitoring mechanisms to prevent the misuse of imported raw materials under the guise of local manufacturing. The association further sought simplification and faster processing of port-level scaling, valuation, and customs clearance procedures, which it said would reduce delays and lower business costs. Highlighting public safety concerns, BEELIA stressed the need for reforms to the existing duty and tax structure to facilitate the import of internationally certified and safety-compliant elevators. The organization also called for a rationalization of duties and taxes to discourage the growing use of low-quality and reconditioned elevators, warning that such equipment poses significant risks to public safety. REHAB Senior Vice President Abdur Razzaq highlighted the importance of government support for the elevator sector in the interest of planned urbanization, smart city development, and safe infrastructure growth. Other speakers at the press conference included BEELIA general secretary Eadul Haque, BEELIA Advisor Emdad Ur Rahman, vice president of BEELIA Asim Sarkar, director of BEELIA Mohammad Zakirul Haque, and BEELIA Chattogram Representative Yusuf Nobi.  

While lawmakers spent Wednesday debating the proposed national budget, one MP drew attention to a matter much closer to home: curtains, microwaves and washing machines. Taking part in the discussion on the proposed 2026-27 budget, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Md Mizanur Rahman urged the authorities to equip MPs' residential flats with the promised household conveniences. The MP lamented that although Parliament has already passed a hefty supplementary budget, the curtains for lawmakers' flats have yet to get a grand appearance. “We are discussing the budget. We have also passed the supplementary budget involving large sums of money. But the curtains meant for the residential flats of MPs have still not been hung,” he said. Addressing the Speaker, the lawmaker went on to press his case for a package of domestic upgrades. “We heard that each flat would receive a washing machine and a microwave oven. Through you, I strongly demand that we receive the curtains, microwaves and washing machines,” he said. The remarks briefly shifted the focus of the budget debate from fiscal policy and development spending to the more immediate challenges of parliamentary living, where apparently the absence of curtains remains a pressing concern. No immediate response was given regarding when the long-awaited curtains, microwaves and washing machines might arrive, leaving MPs to continue their legislative duties while keeping one eye on the budget and the other on their curtain-less windows.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Wednesday told Parliament that the recruitment and promotion of thousands of teachers, as well as appointments to key administrative positions in educational institutions across the country, have remained stalled for a prolonged period due to various legal complications. Making a statement under Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister said thousands of cases related to the education sector are pending in courts, creating significant obstacles to recruitment and administrative processes. The statement came after ruling party lawmaker Zainul Abdin Farroque raised concerns on a point of order regarding the acute shortage of teachers and the legal complexities surrounding recruitment. Milon, who also oversee the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, said the recruitment process for 32,500 teachers, along with separate initiatives to appoint 2,600 and 17,000 teachers, has remained suspended because of pending cases. “Since assuming office, I have been working to resolve these legal complications. From the very first week after taking charge, I personally visited the court premises and made efforts to address these issues,” he said. However, the minister noted that the cases have yet to be listed before the Appellate Division, making it impossible to proceed with recruitment despite an acute teacher shortage nationwide. He said appointments of heads of institutions through the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA), as well as the recruitment of college principals and heads of educational institutions, have also been halted because of ongoing litigation. Milon added that the recruitment of office assistants-cum-night guards at primary schools has similarly been suspended. He told Parliament that thousands of education-related cases are currently under judicial consideration, seriouslyhampering administrative activities in both the education and primary education sectors. The minister further said nearly 33,000 headteacher posts have already fallen vacant across the country. Yet many qualified teachers are retiring before receiving promotions due to legal disputes and complications related to promotion processes. “There are many teachers across Bangladesh who have attained the qualifications required to become headteachers, yet they are not receiving promotions. The legal complexities are preventing these issues from being resolved,” he said. Regarding administrative transfers in primary schools, Milon said authority for such transfers has been decentralised to the upazila, district and divisional levels. Reiterating the government's commitment to resolving the situation, he said achieving the desired progress in recruitment and promotion activities will remain difficult until the pending court cases are disposed of. “The government is making its highest efforts to address the situation. However, meaningful progress in recruitment and promotion will be difficult until these cases are settled.”  

US President Donald Trump said the proposed agreement with Iran remains unfinished and warned that military action could resume if Tehran fails to comply with its commitments. Speaking during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Wednesday, Trump stressed that Washington retained the option of returning to military operations if the agreement proves unsatisfactory. He also dismissed reports suggesting the United States would invest in Iran or support a reconstruction fund for Tehran as part of a broader settlement. Earlier in the summit, Trump reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon under any future agreement. On regional security issues, the US president criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, saying Israel needed to act more responsibly. During a joint appearance with the Emir of Qatar, Trump said the fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group had continued for too long and was causing excessive loss of life. His remarks came as Israel and Hezbollah continued exchanging attacks despite the US-Iran agreement announced on Sunday night. Turning to the war in Ukraine, Trump said he held a productive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and renewed his call for Russia to reach a peace agreement. He also indicated that additional sanctions targeting Russian oil exports could be imposed in the near future if efforts to end the conflict fail to progress. Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna on Wednesday called on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami to abandon what he termed “cheap politics” and return to “healthy political practices.” He made the call while addressing a protest rally held in front of the BNP’s central office at Nayapaltan in the capital in the afternoon, organised against what the party described as misinformation and indecent political practices. The programme was organised by Dhaka South city Jubo Dal. After the rally, a protest march was brought out from Nayapaltan. Munna alleged that a speech by a BNP lawmaker was being misrepresented and circulated as an anti-hijab statement. He claimed that the MP did not mention hijab in his remarks, but that the issue was being deliberately distorted and used to create agitation in different places. The Jubo Dal chief said the people of Bangladesh are religious, adding that late President Ziaur Rahman had inserted the phrase “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” into the Constitution, and therefore a party founded by him could not be anti-Islamic in nature. He also said BNP holds sincere respect for Islam, citing the suspension of their programme during the call to prayer as an example. Munna urged Jamaat not to seek political advantage through misleading statements and propaganda, and to return to constructive political practices instead of what he called “cheap politics.” He also warned that if any indecent or offensive remarks are made about Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, Jubo Dal will respond politically. Leaders of Jubo Dal central and city units were present at the programme.

Security and financial experts at a seminar today emphasized that budgetary allocations for the country's defense and agricultural sectors must be increased substantially to ensure national sovereignty and long-term economic resilience. They expressed deep concern that despite an overall 17 to 18 percent increase in the proposed national budget, the core farming sector saw an increase of only 6 percent, which they termed highly insufficient for the country’s food security. The remarks were made during a seminar organized by the Organization for International Relations and Development (OIRD). The session was presided over by OIRD Chairman and Vice-Chancellor of Manarat International University, Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rob. Speaking at the event as a key discussant, security analyst Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman criticized the country's current foreign policy and defense framework, describing them as structurally weak.  He strongly urged the government to significantly expand its military and defensive capabilities to navigate escalating regional and global geopolitical shifts. Turning to the farming economy, Dr. Rahman alleged that a major portion of the Tk 17,000 to Tk 18,000 crore subsidy allocated for the agricultural sector is routinely siphoned off by middlemen. "The ordinary grassroots farmers receive only a negligible fraction of the state subsidy. A radical structural overhaul is needed to ensure that state assistance directly reaches the actual producers," he pointed out. Presenting the keynote paper at the seminar, prominent economist and Associate Professor of the Bangladesh Institute of Governance and Management (BIGM), Dr. Zubayer Ahmed, raised serious questions regarding the feasibility of the fiscal milestones set in the proposed budget. Dr. Ahmed argued that the targets are heavily detached from the country's real macroeconomic ground realities. "While the country's actual GDP growth rate currently stands at 4.14 percent, the government has set an overly ambitious GDP growth target of 6.5 percent for the upcoming fiscal year," he stated. The economist further noted that the revenue collection target for the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been elevated by nearly 47 percent compared to the previous year. He cautioned that the historic gap between target setting and actual revenue realization has been steadily widening every year due to limited structural enforcement capacity. Other speakers at the seminar urged the government to review the allocations for both defense equipment modernization and grassroots agricultural development before passing the Finance Bill in Parliament, describing them as the twin pillars of national security and survival.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday alleged that those calling for not giving the government time to work are acting out of self-interest, not in the interest of the people, and urged people to remain vigilant. “The people have decided that the BNP will run the country for the next five years and work to implement its promises,” he said while addressing a Family Card distribution programme at the Moulvibazar Govt High School ground. The Prime Minister said a quarter that united with Awami League against BNP, and conspired against democracy and voting rights in the past are now saying the government should not be given time. He asked whether those who say the government should not be given time are speaking against the people’s interests and are driven by their own self-interest. “Those who say BNP should not be given time are not speaking in the interest of the people; they are speaking in their own interest. What should be done against them? People must remain vigilant against them,” Tarique Rahman said. He said BNP’s promises and plans are, in fact, the people’s plans, and urged all to remain alert to those who want to derail this. “BNP does not need to do anything. If the people remain alert, BNP’s job is done. Because the people of this country are the real owners. If the owners remain alert, no one else needs to worry.… I am entrusting the security, development and future of this country to the hands of its people,” the Prime Minister said. In an oblique reference to the main opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, he said many of those now speaking against the government had not been visible during key democratic struggles. “Do you remember what happened in ’86? Do you remember that even during the one-decade-long movement, we did not see them anywhere,” said Tarique Rahman. Referring to the February 12 parliamentary election, he said the people entrusted the BNP with the responsibility of rebuilding the country after years of misrule. “The people have told the BNP to rebuild the country. They have given us five years to put things right,” he said. The Prime Minister arrived in Moulvibazar from Sreemangal in the afternoon and distributed Family Cards among women from low-income families. He handed over cards to 10 beneficiaries and formally inaugurated the third phase of the programme by pressing a button. The programme was launched simultaneously in 19 wards of Moulvibazar and in several upazilas across 21 other districts through an online platform. Earlier, Tarique Rahman planted saplings at the Moulvibazar Govt High School ground. He also planted trees at Victoria High School ground in Sreemangal earlier in the day. At the event, he distributed grants for tea workers' housing, scholarships for their children and one-time financial assistance for underprivileged people, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. Responding to critics who question how programmes such as Family Card scheme will be financed, the Prime Minister said Bangladesh witnessed large-scale siphoning of money abroad over the past one and half decades. “From now on, with the support of the people, we will stop that. The wealth and resources of this country will remain in this country and be used for the welfare of its people,” he said. Tarique Rahman said public money will be spent on improving people's lives rather than being siphoned abroad. Looking ahead, the Prime Minister said the coming years should be devoted to work, nation-building. “The time ahead is a time for work. It is a time to build the country and change the lives of the people.” He called upon people from all walks of life to contribute to national development, saying Bangladesh's future depends on the collective efforts of its people. Tarique Rahman recalled that the people had won the country's independence in 1971 and also freed the nation from authoritarian rule in 2024. “The people built this country before and they will build it again,” he said. Calling for unity, he urged people to pledge that their future politics, hopes and plans will revolve around the country and its citizens. “Building the country must be the politics of the future,” he said. The Prime Minister also highlighted several initiatives launched since his government assumed office on February 17, including the Family Card and Farmers’ Card programmes, loan waivers for small farmers, allowances for religious leaders, free school uniforms and sports competitions. “The benefits of these programmes will reach everyone, regardless of political affiliation,” he said. Tarique Rahman said the current administration belongs to all citizens and is committed to serving people from every walk of life. “Our government is a government for all. The people of Bangladesh are at the centre of everything we do,” he added. The Prime Minister also remembered the development work carried out in the region by former Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman and said Moulvibazar did not receive adequate development attention over the past decade and a half. The programme was chaired by Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister AZM Zahid Hossain. Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, State Minister for Social Welfare Farhana Sharmin, Chief Whip Md GK Gouse, Moulvibazar-3 lawmaker M Naser Rahman and BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, who joined virtually from Keraniganj, also spoke.  

The NGO Affairs Bureau has officially declared its office premises a completely smoke and tobacco-free zone in accordance with national guidelines to safeguard public health and protect non-smokers from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. The declaration was made on Wednesday (17 June) by Dr. Mohammed Jakaria, Director General of the NGO Affairs Bureau, during an event titled “Sustainable Tobacco Control Initiative: Declaration of Premise of NGO Affairs Bureau Tobacco-Free” held at the Bureau’s meeting room.  Under the declaration, the sale, purchase, and use of all tobacco products within the NGO Affairs Bureau premises are strictly prohibited. This measure aims to ensure that employees and visitors are protected from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.  The Director General further stated that all activities within the office will be conducted in compliance with national tobacco control guidelines, maintaining a completely smoke and tobacco-free environment. During the event, it was highlighted that Bangladesh remains one of the largest consumers of tobacco in the world. Among South Asian countries, Bangladesh has the highest tobacco use prevalence at 35.3 percent, compared to 28.6 percent in India and 19.1 percent in Pakistan.  According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2017, approximately 37.8 million adults in Bangladesh currently use tobacco. Data from the Tobacco Atlas 2025 indicate that nearly 200,000 people die each year in Bangladesh from tobacco-related diseases, while several hundred thousand more suffer from disability and illness. Recent research conducted by the Health Economics Institute of the University of Dhaka found that tobacco tax revenue amounted to approximately BDT 41,000 crore during the 2024–25 fiscal year. In contrast, the economic cost of tobacco-related deaths, health damage, and environmental degradation reached nearly BDT 87,000 crore—more than double the revenue generated. Overall, tobacco use continues to pose a growing threat to public health, the economy, and the environment in Bangladesh. Bangladesh became a signatory to the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in 2003. Building upon this commitment, the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Act, 2026 was enacted. Key provisions of the law include the prohibition of smoking and tobacco use in all public places and both motorized and non-motorized public transport; the prohibition of designated smoking areas (DSAs) in public places and public transport. In this context, the NGO Affairs Bureau office has been declared a completely smoke and tobacco-free zone to protect public health and shield non-smokers from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. As Chief Guest, Dr. Mohammed Jakaria stated: “Smoking harms not only smokers but also non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Ensuring a tobacco-free environment is essential for protecting public health." Speaking as special guest, Shivani Bhattacharya, Convener of the Anti-Tobacco Mothers’ Forum, said: “it is undoubtedly a far-sighted and public health-friendly initiative. Through this declaration, the Bureau has not only taken an administrative decision but has also demonstrated its strong commitment to health protection and tobacco control.” Co-Convener of the Anti-Tobacco Teachers’ Forum Tanushree Haldar said the NGO Affairs Bureau will serve as a model and inspiration for other public and private institutions across the country."Declaring workplaces smoke and tobacco-free will not only ensure a healthier and safer environment but will also strengthen the government’s ongoing tobacco control efforts," he said Expressing gratitude to the NGO Affairs Bureau authorities,  Executive Director of Nari Maitree and Chair of the event Shaheen Akter Dolly that the initiative by the NGO Affairs Bureau is a highly positive and significant step toward tobacco control. "However, it should not remain merely a declaration. Its effective implementation requires the collective efforts of all officers and staff of the Bureau. I believe that commitment already exists among everyone in this office,” she said. The event was also attended by Barrister Md. Khalilur Rahman Khan, NDC, Director (Joint Secretary) of the NGO Affairs Bureau, officials from various departments of the Bureau, and members of the Anti-Tobacco Mothers’, Teachers’, and Youth Forums. All participants emphasized the importance of maintaining a tobacco-free workplace and welcomed the initiative.

Administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Abdus Salam on Wednesday said the existing household waste collection system may be abolished and replaced with a new mechanism next year if residents continue to be deprived of the expected level of service. "We have received various complaints regarding the ward-based tender system currently used for household waste collection. In some areas, waste is not being collected on time, while in others there are allegations of excessive charges. Whether the current system will continue next year is being seriously considered," he said. The DSCC administrator made the remarks while addressing a ceremony as chief guest at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium where special Eid grants from the Prime Minister were distributed among city corporation sanitation workers. A total of 4,950 sanitation workers each received Tk 5,000 as a special Eid assistance grant. In his speech, Salam described sanitation work as one of the most difficult and demanding services performed by city corporation employees. "If citizens remain conscious and sanitation workers continue their sincere efforts, it will be possible to transform the face of Dhaka within the next two years," he said, urging both sanitation workers and media professionals to play an active role in raising public awareness about cleanliness.  

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday said Bangladesh Police has adopted a number of technology-driven plans and is implementing them through multifaceted activities to ensure public safety and maintain law and order across the country. The minister said this while responding to a starred tabled question placed by ruling party lawmaker Nilufar Chowdhury Moni (Women seat-10) in the House. He said regular and special police drives are continuing on the basis of intelligence information to recover illegal firearms, explosives, narcotics and other prohibited items, while legal action is being taken against those involved. Salahuddin said visible police patrols have been strengthened alongside enhanced intelligence surveillance to prevent theft, mugging and robbery. To curb extremism, he said, law enforcement agencies are maintaining regular communication with leaders of mosques, temples, churches and other religious institutions to ensure that no form of extremism can gain ground. The minister also said modern technologies, including location tracking and mobile call-list analysis, are being effectively used to identify and arrest criminals. Highlighting efforts to combat cybercrime, he said regular monitoring is being conducted using information technology tools. Besides, CCTV cameras are being installed at important locations, while technology-assisted systems are helping law enforcement agencies identify offenders and bring them under the law, Salahuddin said. He further said close monitoring is being carried out on social media platforms, including Facebook and X, to prevent the spread of hateful images, videos, comments and rumours that could create unrest or undesirable situations. The minister noted that online data entry systems and information technology are being utilised in ongoing operations to apprehend criminals. At the same time, state-of-the-art technologies are being incorporated to further enhance the operational capabilities of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), he said. Salahuddin added that modernisation work on the National Emergency Service 999 is also underway to ensure prompt access to police, ambulance and fire service assistance for the public.

Bangladesh’s transition to greener transport systems must ensure protection for workers, vulnerable communities, and informal operators so that no one is left behind, said Additional Secretary (Climate Change Wing) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Mohammad Navid Safiullah. He made the remarks while addressing the National Youth Summit on Just Transition and Sustainable Urban Mobility in Bangladesh, organised by YouthNet Global in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Bangladesh on Tuesday at Aloki Convention Centre in Dhaka, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. The summit brought together around 150 participants, including youth leaders, policymakers, climate experts, diplomats, academics, and trade union representatives. European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller joined the concluding session to underline the EU's commitment to Bangladesh. "The European Union, together with the European Investment Bank and EU member states, is a strong and reliable partner for Bangladesh in helping shape a just, efficient, and clean transition," he said. Executive Coordinator of YouthNet Global Sohanur Rahman stressed the need to place young people at the centre of climate and transport governance. Speaking as the chief guest, Safiullah said Bangladesh is at a critical crossroads, as rapid urbanisation, rising traffic congestion, deteriorating air quality, and unequal access to transport continue to challenge sustainable development. Reflecting on the challenges of conventional transport systems, he highlighted the need to accelerate the transition towards cleaner mobility solutions while ensuring social protection for affected communities. Highlighting the progress of green mobility, Safiullah said millions of electric three-wheelers are already operating across Bangladesh. However, he stressed that the transition must be supported by clean energy generation, stronger charging infrastructure, and environmentally safe battery management systems. “A transition is only truly green if it is both safe and clean,” he said, warning that unsafe battery recycling continues to create serious environmental and public health risks. Speakers linked transport reform directly to public health, noting that air pollution has become one of Bangladesh’s most urgent urban challenges, affecting children, workers, and vulnerable communities. “For the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, sustainable urban mobility is more than a transport issue. It is also about public health, equity, and social justice,” Safiullah said. “When a low-income worker, a woman, or a person with a disability cannot access safe and affordable transport, they are denied opportunity and dignity.” He stressed that an equitable transition must include reskilling opportunities for transport workers, recognition of informal operators, and improved access to safe and affordable mobility services for all citizens. Youth engagement and collaboration across society, he added, will be essential for implementing NDC 3.0 and advancing Bangladesh’s climate ambitions ahead of COP31. Opening the summit, Dr Felix Gerdes, Resident Representative of FES Bangladesh, underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders to address urban mobility and environmental challenges. Participants adopted a set of youth-led policy recommendations calling for cleaner public transport, stronger labour protections, expanded green jobs, improved air quality, and greater youth participation in decision-making as Bangladesh advances towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday told Parliament that the government is considering construction of another barrage on the Teesta River to conserve water during the dry season. “Technical and financial aspects are being examined for constructing another barrage on the Teesta River to conserve water during the dry season,” he said while replying to a tabled question from NCP lawmaker Akhter Hossen (Rangpur-4). He said the Teesta is vital for livelihoods in northern Bangladesh, but upstream dams and other limitations reduce water flow during the dry season, affecting irrigation and agriculture, while excessive rainfall upstream often causes sudden floods and riverbank erosion during the monsoon. The Prime Minister said riverbank protection works covering 42.5 kilometres are underway in five Teesta basin districts—Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat—at a cost of Tk 230 crore and are scheduled for completion this month. He said a feasibility study for a sustainable and integrated Teesta development plan has already been completed, he said. According to the study, the proposed Teesta Master Plan includes river training and protection works along 110 kilometres, dredging of another 110 kilometres, construction of 224 kilometres of flood control embankments with roads on top, and reclamation and development of 170 square kilometres of land. Replying to a tabled question from treasury bench lawmaker Robiul Awal (Tangail-6), the Prime Minister said implementation of the Tk 34,347-crore Padma Barrage project will add an extra 0.45 percent growth to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “Once the project is implemented, it will be possible to generate 113 MW of hydropower and achieve an additional 0.45 percent GDP growth,” he said. The Prime Minister said the current government's election manifesto has attached importance to tackling climate change and that a number of multi-dimensional programmes have been undertaken in the water resources sector to address its adverse impacts. These include implementation of the Padma Barrage project, the Teesta Master Plan, riverbank erosion prevention, flood protection measures and reduction of salinity in agricultural lands, he said. Noting that the first phase of the Padma Barrage project involving Tk 34,347 crore was approved on May 13 last, he said, "Through the implementation of this project, the river system in the Padma-dependent areas will be revitalised by conserving water in the Padma River during the dry season and increasing the flow of water." Besides, it would reduce salinity intrusion in the southern region, restore the ecological balance of the Sundarbans, improve drainage systems, reduce waterlogging, expand irrigation facilities and strengthen water security, said Tarique Rahman. Highlighting different climate initiatives, he said a programme has been undertaken to plant 25 crore trees in the next five years. He said the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust has prioritised research, innovation, training and extension activities to address climate risks and has taken several initiatives, including the creation of rural natural reservoirs in coastal districts to preserve rainwater and ensure drinking water security. The Prime Minister said the government has taken an initiative to formulate a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Investment Roadmap with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to implement the NAP under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to combat the adverse impacts of climate changes. Alongside adaptation efforts, he said, the government has started preparing the Third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Under the NDC 3.0, some 25 percent of the country's total electricity demand will be met from renewable sources by 2035, four waste-to-energy plants and 26 integrated landfill and resource recovery facilities will be established, while afforestation and reforestation programmes covering 100,000 hectares in coastal, island and degraded areas will be implemented. He said work has also begun on formulating Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies to reduce emissions. Replying to a question from BNP lawmaker Md Abdullah (Munshiganj-1), the Prime Minister said the government has adopted various measures to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio and the National Board of Revenue has already adopted a Medium and Long-Term Revenue Strategy (MLTRS) in this regard. “We hope that implementation of these plans will increase the tax-to-GDP ratio by two percentage points within one year and raise it to 10 percent within five years,” he said. He added that various initiatives, including the Strengthening Domestic Revenue Mobilisation Project and gradual rationalisation of tax exemptions, have been undertaken with a target of increasing the tax-to-GDP ratio to 15 percent by 2035. Responding to a question from BNP lawmaker Mobasser Alam Bhuiyan (Cumilla-10), Tarique Rahman said the government’s electoral manifesto put importance on the improvement of road and rail connectivity. To improve the road connectivity, he said plans have been taken to gradually establish an expressway grid on national highways and develop a multimodal transport system to reduce pressure on roads. Regarding railways, the PM said 24 projects have been identified under short-term (up to 2026-27), medium-term (2027-2030) and long-term (2031-2045) action plans to implement the Railway Master Plan and establish Bangladesh Railway as the backbone of the national transport system. According to the formulated Railway Master Plan, railway services will be gradually brought to the doorsteps of every district and major towns with the aim of establishing Bangladesh Railway as the backbone of the national transport system, he said. The government has also decided to introduce electric traction on major routes to reduce travel time and ensure safer and environment-friendly transportation, he added. Replying to a question from treasury bench lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Simul Biswas (Pabna-5), the Prime Minister said the government is working to gradually increase the use of surface water in Dhaka and all divisional cities to reduce pressure on groundwater. He said Dhaka WASA currently collects around 65 to 70 percent of its water from groundwater sources and the remaining 30 to 35 percent from surface water sources such as the Padma, Meghna and Shitalakkhya rivers. To address alarming depletion of groundwater levels in Dhaka, water treatment plants at Gandharbpur in Rupganj and Saidabad are increasing the supply of treated water from the Meghna and Shitalakkhya rivers, he said. Tarique Rahman said Chattogram WASA now sources about 92 percent of its water from surface sources, while only eight percent comes from groundwater. He said Rajshahi WASA currently supplies two percent of its water from surface sources and 98 percent from groundwater. Responding to a question from BNP lawmaker Mostafizur Rahman Babul (Jamalpur-3), the Prime Minister said the government is attaching the highest priority to implementing the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) to prevent measles outbreaks. He said the causes and spread of measles, as well as the impact of policy and operational issues on vaccination activities, are being regularly reviewed and evaluated. He said the matter will be examined based on necessary data and technical assessments to determine whether any changes in vaccine procurement procedures have negatively affected immunisation activities. If any negligence of any person or institution is found, necessary action will be taken in accordance with existing laws and regulations, he said.

A Chattogram tribunal on Wednesday sentenced the lone accused to life imprisonment in a case filed over the rape of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in the Bakalia area of Chattogram city last month. Judge of the Chattogram Children Violence Suppression Tribunal Syeda Hafsa Juma handed down the punishment, setting a new precedent in judicial proceedings as the trial concluded within 27 days following the incident. The convict is Monir Hossain, 32, a worker of a decorator shop in the Bakalia area. He hails from Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla district. The court also fined him Tk 50,000. The convict was present in the dock when the judge pronounced the verdict. According to the prosecution, the girl was raped by Monir on May 21 this year. Local people caught him red-handed and later police arrested him. However, while he was being taken to the police station after the arrest, an agitated crowd surrounded them, demanding that he be handed over to them. To bring the situation under control, police charged baton, lobbed teargas shells and fired sound grenades, leaving several of them injured. During the incident, the angry mob also set fire to a police vehicle. On June 4, police completed investigation against Monir and submitted a charge sheet against him on June 9. GM Zahed Hossain, lawyer of the plaintiff, said they will file an appeal with the High Court seeking capital punishment for the convict.

What began as a journey to purchase mikes for a village mosque ended in tragedy when two elderly brothers were killed and two other individuals injured after a truck slammed into their battery-run auto-rickshaw in Rajshahi's Puthia upazila on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Abdul Khaleque Pramanik, 65, and his brother Hasen Pramanik, 60, sons of late Riaz Pramanik of Nakulbaria village in the upazila. The injured are Lalon, son of Hatem, and Laltu, son of Jalal, of the same village. Witnesses said the four men were travelling to Rajshahi in the auto-rickshaw to purchase mikes for their village mosque. When the vehicle reached Baneshwar, a truck travelling towards Natore from the opposite direction crashed into it in front of the local Yamaha showroom, leaving Khaleque dead on the spot and three others injured. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where Hasen Pramanik succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Mahabur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Paba Highway Police Station, said the truck driver and his assistant fled the scene after the accident. Police have seized the vehicle and initiated legal proceedings.

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have voiced support for US President Donald Trump’s proposed agreement with Iran aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and extending a fragile ceasefire, although details of the deal remain largely undisclosed. In a joint declaration issued at the summit in France, G7 leaders described the proposed agreement as a “historic opportunity” to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and address concerns related to its regional influence and ballistic missile programme. The leaders pledged support for implementing the agreement, despite the fact that neither Washington nor Tehran has officially released the text. According to leaked versions of the interim accord, Iran would immediately move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the deal is signed and would be permitted to resume unrestricted oil exports. The agreement is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday. The proposed framework also envisions the United States working toward lifting American and United Nations sanctions on Iran if a comprehensive agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme is reached. Speaking on the sidelines of the summit during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Trump said the agreement remained confidential but described it as a strong memorandum of understanding. “Nobody knows what it is but it’s very strong,” Trump told reporters, adding that the United States could abandon the deal if it proves unsatisfactory. While backing the initiative, G7 leaders acknowledged the importance of restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one-fifth of globally traded oil and natural gas passed before the conflict began. Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman has expressed agreement in principle with the seven-point demand put forward by the Islami Bank Sachetan Grahak Forum to restore corporate governance in Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, the platform said on Wednesday. It said central bank Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed conveyed this to the forum leaders during a meeting at the central bank headquarters. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the convener of the forum Prof Nur Nabi Manik said the governor took the matter positively. He said the deputy governor told them that the central bank chief agreed in principle with their demands. The forum chief reiterated their core position, emphasising that individuals tainted by financial irregularities, loan scams, or institutional plunder must be permanently barred from occupying positions on the board of directors or holding the post of chairman at Islami Bank. "The new board must consist entirely of highly ethical, professional, and politically neutral individuals," Manik added. He expressed optimism that rebuilding the board based on their seven-point charter will heavily reinforce depositor confidence and restore structural stability to the country's largest Shariah-based commercial lender. Forum leaders assured the central bank that once their demands are visibly implemented on the ground, they will disseminate positive messages to millions of depositors across the country, playing a supportive role in rebuilding the bank's operational legacy. The demands of the forum are formation of an independent, capable, and professional board of directors; reviewing the controversial ownership and shareholding changes of 2017 to reinstate the rights of genuine, original owners; establishing a special tribunal to fast-track the trial of those accused of plundering bank funds; immediate recovery of looted capital and confiscation of illicitly acquired assets; refraining from controversial or arbitrary regulatory decisions to curb panic and volatility across the banking sector; amending Section 18(a) of the Bank Company Act to close rehabilitation loops for financial fraudsters; and withdrawing misleading political statements regarding the bank's health made in Parliament.

Acknowledging common risks posed by climate change and environmental challenges, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal Dol Prasad Aryal on Wednesday said environmental risks affecting the Himalayan region and coastal areas are shared concerns for the region and called for greater cooperation in mitigating them. The Nepalese Speaker appreciated Bangladesh’s remarkable gains in economic growth and infrastructure development noting that Bangladesh’s development experiences could contribute to Nepal’s own development journey. He made the remarks when Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqur Rahman met him at his office in Kathmandu. The Speaker said the growing role of sports in bringing the peoples of the two countries closer together by fostering friendship and understanding among the youth. He further emphasized the importance of tourism, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people contacts in strengthening bilateral relations. Ambassador Shafiqur congratulated the Speaker on assuming his new role and conveyed warm greetings from the Speaker of Parliament of Bangladesh. He also thanked the Speaker for Nepal’s support to Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman who has recently been elected President of the UN General Assembly’s 81st session.  

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday told Parliament that among 2,369 people, pushed into Bangladesh by Indian BSF since August 5, 2024, 2,175 were handed over to respective police stations, 11 were returned to the BSF and 183 were pushed back through border. Replying to a starred question from lawmaker Mohammad Abdul Malik (Sylhet-3), he also said the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has thwarted 36 attempted push-ins by the BSF following the West Bengal Assembly elections in India. Responding to a question from MP Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas (Pabna-5), the Minister said initiatives have been taken to construct barbed-wire fencing along the Myanmar border to strengthen security and curb border killings, illegal infiltration, drug trafficking, arms smuggling and other transnational crimes. He said fencing at sensitive points along the Bangladesh-India border is currently under consideration. Answering a question from reserved-seat MP Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Salahuddin said smuggled goods worth Tk 19.79 billion have been seized from June 2025 to May 2026. During the period, the BGB conducted 375,519  drives along border areas and recovered 18.38 million Yaba pills, 55,908 bottles of Phensidyl, 18,463 kilograms of cannabis and 106,709 bottles of foreign liquor. The force also seized 15.577 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as Ice, 2.08 kilograms of cocaine and 62 bottles of LSD. A total of 2,189 suspects were arrested during the drives, he added. In response to a question from MP Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal (Kishoreganj-5), the Minister said the Department of Narcotics Control conducted 30,744 anti-drug operations nationwide between February 17 and May 31, filed 9,251 cases and arrested 9,685 drug traffickers. He said a nationwide special operation against drugs and terrorism has been underway since May 1 following the government directives. Up to June 8, law enforcement agencies have arrested 10,865 people in 7,688 drug-related cases and recovered large quantities of narcotics. The operation also led to the recovery of 125 illegal firearms and the arrest of 269 people in connection with arms-related offences, he added. Replying to a question from MP A E Sultan Mahmud (Jamalpur-2), Salahuddin said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken various measures to curb juvenile gang activities and ensure public safety in the capital. He said the DMP's cyber unit has been monitoring Facebook pages, secret groups and TikTok accounts operated by juvenile gangs. The Minister also informed Parliament that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2 has conducted 119 anti-mugging drives in Mohammadpur since August 5, 2024 and arrested 252 suspected muggers. Responding to a question from MP Abul Hasnat (Cumilla-4), Salahuddin said the country's 75 prisons have an approved capacity of 45,136 inmates, including 43,107 men and 2,029 women. However, the current prison population stands at 77,040, comprising 74,963 men and 2,077 women, which is about 1.7 times more than the authorised capacity. In reply to a question from reserved-seat MP Selina Sultana, he said prisoners receive 50 per cent of the profits generated from the sale of goods produced inside prisons. Answering a question from reserved-seat MP Arifa Sultana, the Minister said the government, along with the Bangladesh Police, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, intelligence agencies and other relevant organisations, is working to block online gambling and betting platforms and protect the public, particularly young people, from their harmful effects. He said the government has initiated the process of enacting a new law titled the Gambling Prevention Act 2026, replacing the century-old Public Gambling Act of 1867, to curb the spread of online gambling, betting apps and websites across the country.  

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) on Wednesday issued FIX (Financial Information Exchange) certification to three more brokerage houses, bringing them closer to launching their own Order Management Systems (OMS) through API connectivity with the exchange's Nasdaq matching engine. The certificates were handed over at a ceremony by DSE Chief Financial Officer Md Abid Hossain Khan to representatives of GMF Securities Limited, Prime Islami Securities Limited, and Unicap Securities Limited. Head of IT at GMF Securities Lubna Mahmud, CEO of Prime Islami Securities Md Rajib Hasan and Unicap Securities CEO Waliul Islam received the certificates on behalf of their organisations. DSE Deputy General Manager Jisan Bin Mubarak and Assistant General Manager Kamrun Nahar, along with other senior officials, were present at the event. With the latest batch, DSE has now certified a total of 61 brokerage houses under the FIX protocol. Of these, 53 have already gone live with their own OMS platforms, conducting trading operations via API integration with the exchange. DSE had initiated the API-based Broker House Order Management System (BHOMS) programme in 2020. Following that, 85 brokerage houses applied to DSE seeking API connectivity with the Nasdaq matching engine to operate their proprietary order management systems.    

Iran is expected to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and regain the ability to export oil without restrictions under a proposed interim agreement with the United States aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the two countries, according to leaked versions of the accord and officials familiar with the negotiations. The agreement, which is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday, reportedly outlines a framework for ending hostilities and launching a two-month period of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. Under the proposed arrangement, Iran would immediately reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and natural gas shipments, while the United States would allow Tehran to resume oil exports. The accord also reportedly includes plans for Iran to receive at least $300 billion for post-war reconstruction and a US commitment to work toward lifting American and United Nations sanctions if a comprehensive nuclear agreement is ultimately reached. The conflict began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran, citing concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. The interim deal would halt the fighting before any final resolution of those concerns, instead opening the door for further diplomatic negotiations. The reported concessions to Iran, particularly the immediate resumption of oil exports and the prospect of broader sanctions relief, are expected to draw criticism in Washington. Analysts say the terms appear more favourable to Tehran than those contained in the 2015 nuclear agreement, from which President Donald Trump withdrew during his first term. The proposed accord would also seek to end hostilities in Lebanon involving Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, although differences remain over the future of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. Several officials and individuals familiar with the discussions said leaked versions of the agreement published by regional and international media outlets largely reflect the contents of the final document. However, neither the White House nor the Iranian government has released an official text. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said leaked versions published by media outlets do not fully represent the language of the final agreement but provided no further details. President Trump, speaking during the G7 summit in France, praised the proposed arrangement, describing it as a strong memorandum of understanding. However, he also warned that the United States could abandon the agreement if it proves unsatisfactory. “It’s a memorandum of understanding and if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs,” Trump said. The agreement remains subject to formal signing and could still face political opposition from both US and Israeli leaders, as well as critics concerned about Iran’s nuclear programme and regional influence.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday expressed concern over the growing number of patients addicted to Ice (crystal methamphetamine) being admitted to drug rehabilitation centres across Bangladesh. Speaking in Parliament, the minister said the increase in Ice addiction cases is  alarming and highlighted the need for stronger and more coordinated efforts to combat the spread of narcotics in the country. The Minister said this while responding to a written question of BNP MP M Abul Kalam. He told House that the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has formulated a 180-day action plan, a work plan for the 2026–27 fiscal year, and a five-year strategic implementation framework in line with the current government's election manifesto. The minister also said a proposal to modernise the Narcotics Control Act, 2018 has already been finalised by a committee formed by the DNC. Describing the strengthening of the DNC as highly relevant in the face of the growing drug menace nationwide, Salahuddin Ahmed said the department has been working relentlessly to curb narcotics trafficking and abuse. He noted that the DNC is conducting regular patrol operations through temporary checkpoints established in border districts to prevent the smuggling of drugs from neighbouring Myanmar and India. The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening anti-narcotics measures and enhancing the operational capacity of the DNC to address emerging drug-related challenges across the country.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Wednesday ordered police officials to intensify drives against drug dealers, extortionists, muggers and other criminals, stressing the need for heightened vigilance to maintain law and order across the capital. He made the directives while addressing senior police officials at the monthly crime review meeting for May 2026 held at the DMP headquarters. The DMP chief instructed officers to intensify crackdown against drugs, and arrest warrant-listed accused in areas under their respective jurisdictions. He also stressed the need to keep police stations free from brokers and directed all concerned to remain alert so that no crime could take place within their areas. Mosleh Uddin said officers demonstrating good performance will be rewarded, while strict action will be taken against any negligence of duty, breach of discipline or activities that tarnish the image of the police. Speaking at the meeting, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam said all officials must work in a coordinated manner to ensure the smooth implementation of programmes marking the upcoming Holy Ashura. He urged police personnel to remain watchful to prevent any disorder or deterioration of the law-and-order situation. During the meeting, the DMP commissioner presented awards to officers of different ranks in recognition of their contributions to maintaining law and order, controlling crime and ensuring public safety in the capital in May.

Detectives have arrested a man accused of defrauding multiple people by promising overseas investment opportunities and using purported political connections to gain their trust. Police said they arrested Md Shishir Munna, 28, a former administrator of the Facebook pages of former Land Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda and former lawmaker Anupam Shahjahan Joy, in the capital early Wednesday on charges of fraud, forgery and embezzlement. At a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Additional Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said Munna had left Bangladesh after August 5, 2024, and travelled to Qatar. After returning to the country in April 2025, he resumed fraudulent activities, he said. Munna and his associates persuaded a businessman to invest in purported government projects in Qatar and collected Tk 11.27 lakh in several instalments. They later provided the victim with a fake visa and a forged airline ticket. When the businessman discovered the deception and demanded a refund, the accused allegedly delayed repayment and threatened him, police said. A case was subsequently filed with Jatrabari Police Station on charges of fraud, forgery and misappropriation of funds. The DB chief said that after the victim sought assistance from detectives, a team from the DB's Wari Division launched an investigation and identified 14 to 15 other victims. Police said preliminary findings showed that Munna used to manage the Facebook pages of former minister Narayan Chandra Chanda and former MP Anupam Shahjahan Joy. His responsibilities included producing campaign videos, managing social media publicity and conducting promotional activities. He is wanted in another case and faces an arrest warrant issued by South Keraniganj Police Station, police said. Responding to questions from journalists, Shafiqul Islam said Munna often claimed to have close ties with incumbent ministers and lawmakers. To bolster those claims, he used to invite victims to the South Plaza area of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. He added that four to five more individuals are believed to be involved in the fraud ring, including Munna’s sister, who is currently abroad and allegedly assisted the operation from outside the country. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the remaining suspects, police said.    

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir on Wednesday said three major reform initiatives have been launched in the country’s revenue system, asserting that reducing tax evasion, tax exemptions and tax fraud will automatically boost revenue collection. He made the remarks while addressing a dialogue on the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2026-27, jointly organised by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the Policy Research Institute (PRI) at the MCCI headquarters in Gulshan. PRI Director Ahmad Ahsan presented the keynote paper titled "Macroeconomic Outlook and Budget Priorities: Stability as the Foundation for Restoring Growth" at the event. MCCI President Kamran T Rahman delivered the welcome address, while PRI Chairman Dr Zaidi Sattar and MCCI Vice President Habibullah N Karim also spoke. Outlining the government's economic strategy, Titumir said Bangladesh is pursuing a three-phase recovery plan: Recovery, Restoration, and Reconstruction for Acceleration, with emphasis on consumption, investment, public expenditure and export diversification. On fiscal reform, he said separate task forces are now operating in the income tax, customs and VAT sectors, each guided by monthly work plans and milestone targets, with progress reviewed every month. The adviser acknowledged that revenue data presented in the past often did not reflect ground realities, and said efforts are underway to bring greater transparency to fiscal reporting. He warned against the growing imbalance between operational and development spending, noting that while recurrent expenditure has been rising rapidly, the ADP or capital expenditure has not kept pace, a trend he described as a long-term challenge. Criticising the slow pace of project implementation, Titumir said the country currently has around 1,300 projects at various stages of execution, some running for 12 to 14 years with multiple revisions. He announced plans to introduce a dashboard-based real-time monitoring system for development projects and also emphasised implementing an open data policy, saying making BBS data and other institutional data publicly accessible will improve transparency in policymaking. In his keynote presentation, Ahmad Ahsan described the FY27 budget as “ambitious, imaginative, and broadly inclusive”, essentially a budget for everybody, but raised significant concerns about the macroeconomic framework underpinning it. He noted that the domestic economy is exhibiting stagflationary signs, with private investment growth turning sharply negative for the first time in decades, and warned that the current slowdown is not a one-year dip but “the latest, sharpest leg of a longer downturn.” Ahmad Ahsan said the budget's revenue projections appear “out of norm,” noting that while the budget introduces several innovative tax policy measures, including mandatory TINs and BINs, turnover taxes for small businesses, quarterly e-VAT submissions and duty reductions on solar, EVs and semiconductors, it lacks high-impact reforms such as a unified VAT rate or a reduction in tax expenditures that could significantly improve compliance. On foreign financing, he said the budget targets a gross external inflow of Tk 1,558 billion, some 89 percent above what FY26 actually delivered, calling the projection overly optimistic given fiscal stress in high-income countries and the FY26 pattern of significant underperformance against targets. The PRI director urged the government to prepare a credible “Plan B”, a mid-term revised budget, with a clearly prioritised core expenditure package to be protected if revenues and foreign financing fall short. The PRI paper flagged major unrecognised contingent liabilities in the energy and banking sectors. Ahmad Ahsan said the off-budget fuel import exposure through BPC and Petrobangla, estimated at around US$ 12 billion annually, remains entirely outside the fiscal framework. On banking, he said the 2026 asset quality reviews put the true contingent liability at Tk 7.40 lakh crore, roughly 13.7 percent of GDP and about 18 times the Tk 40,000 crore allocated for bank recapitalisation this year, with no costed multi-year resolution framework in the budget. Ahmad Ahsan also called for addressing Bangladesh’s persistent anti-export bias, particularly in light engineering, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals and leather goods, noting that the bias is worst exactly where diversification is most needed. He drew comparisons with Vietnam's success in attracting export-oriented FDI as a model Bangladesh should emulate. On public spending, the PRI director stressed the need to strengthen expenditure monitoring institutions, including giving the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) real enforcement powers, modernising BBS data systems, and cutting the roughly eight-month lag in monthly fiscal reporting to enable mid-year course correction. He also proposed a public works programme targeting light infrastructure, upazila and rural roads, canal cleaning and sewage clearance to generate productive employment for several hundred thousand workdays while yielding strong economic returns.  

The government is reviewing a proposal to reduce passport fees for Bangladeshis living abroad while continuing efforts to simplify passport services for migrant workers and expatriates, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed told Parliament on Wednesday. Responding to a tabled starred question from ruling party lawmaker Khairul Kabir Khokon (Narsingdi-1), he said Bangladesh had a total of 25,433,063 active passport holders as of June 4, 2026. Regarding passport services for migrant workers, Salahuddin said a proposal submitted by the Department of Immigration and Passports to lower passport fees for Bangladeshis residing in different countries is currently under review by the Ministry of Home Affairs. He highlighted a number of initiatives already undertaken to make passport services more accessible for Bangladeshi expatriates. The minister said arrangements have been made to process passport applications through Mobile Enrolment Kits (MEK) in remote areas under Bangladesh missions abroad, enabling Bangladeshis abroad to apply for passports conveniently. He also said initiatives have been taken to provide passport services for expatriate workers through outsourcing companies engaged by Bangladesh missions overseas. To ensure faster delivery, passports are being sent to Bangladeshi embassies and high commissions abroad through the international courier service FedEx, Salahuddin added. He further informed the House that steps are underway to introduce home delivery services for passports through outsourcing companies, making passport collection easier for expatriates. The minister also said the government has already introduced the issuance of 10-year passports for all Bangladeshi citizens aged 18 and above.  

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday described the killing of innocent Bangladeshi citizens by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the border as deeply unfortunate and a clear violation of human rights. “The killing of innocent Bangladeshi nationals by the BSF is extremely regrettable and constitutes a clear violation of human rights,” he told Parliament. Responding to a written question from ruling party MP Nilufar Chowdhury Moni (Women Seat-10), the Minister said Bangladesh has consistently protested the use of lethal weapons by the BSF along the border and has continued to press for accountability and compensation through diplomatic and bilateral engagements. He said the issue has been raised strongly by Bangladesh during border conferences held between the chiefs of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF. Salahuddin Ahmed said there has been no specific institutional discussion or formal agreement under which the Government of India directly provides financial assistance to the families of Bangladeshis killed in BSF firing incidents along the border. However, he said Bangladesh has repeatedly voiced strong objections during bilateral meetings to the BSF’s practice of using lethal weapons under the pretext of self-defence. Through these engagements, Bangladesh has also indirectly exerted pressure regarding compensation and accountability for such incidents. Highlighting the outcomes of discussions between the two countries on border killings, the Minister said Bangladesh’s sustained diplomatic and strategic efforts have yielded some positive commitments from the Indian side. Under continued pressure from Bangladesh, the BSF has on several occasions pledged to refrain from using lethal weapons and instead employ non-lethal means in managing border situations. He also said that cooperation between the BGB and BSF has been strengthened to reduce border deaths and curb cross-border crimes. As part of these efforts, night-time joint patrols have been increased in vulnerable and sensitive border areas to enhance surveillance and prevent untoward incidents. The Minister further informed Parliament that mechanisms have been put in place to address any unexpected border incidents promptly through flag meetings at the company and battalion commander levels. “Whenever any undesirable incident occurs along the border, local-level flag meetings between the respective commanders are convened swiftly to bring the situation under control and prevent escalation,” he said. Bangladesh has long maintained that the use of deadly force against unarmed civilians along the border is unacceptable and has repeatedly called on India to adopt a policy of zero deaths at the frontier.

A group of 7-8 people allegedly gang-raped a woman after abducting her at Kurchai village in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh district early Wednesday. Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge of Pagla Police Station Aminul Islam said the women along with her husband and a three-year-old child used to live at her mother’s house at the village. Around 1:00am, a group of masked miscreants, numbering 7-8, swooped on the house and beat her husband up. Later, they picked the woman up after tying her husband at the house and took her to an abandoned house around 200 metres away, where they violated her in turns. Later, the family members rescued the woman and her mother filed a case at Pagla Police Station. The OC said they sent the woman to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for medical test. He said they were investigating the matter and legal action is under process. Locals said the woman got divorced with her husband one and half months ago over family dispute. However, the couple continued to live together.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday announced his government’s firm stance against the siphoning of money abroad, stressing that public money belongs to the people and should be used to improve their lives and change their fortunes. “We will take a tough position from today against those who have laundered money from this country and those who want to siphon off people’s money abroad,” he said while addressing a programme marking the inauguration of the third-phase Family Card distribution programme at the Victoria High School ground in Sreemangal. The Prime Minister said the country’s people should also remain vigilant so that no one can siphon off the country's wealth. “If we all keep our eyes and ears open, no one will be able to launder the country's assets abroad. We will work together and use that money to change the lives of our people,” he said. When Tarique Rahman asked whether people will stand with the government in that effort, thousands of attendees, including tea workers and local residents, responded in unison with a resounding “yes.” Calling for collective commitment, he said, “Let our pledge on this joyous day be one thing: work for the country and put Bangladesh first.” The Prime Minister also coined a new slogan, saying: “We will work, we will build the country. Bangladesh first, Bangladesh for all.” "We have seen over the past 17 years how public money was siphoned out of the country. Instead of being spent on the people, it was sent abroad by a political group," he said. Referring to opposition’s questions about funding government’s welfare initiatives, Tarique Rahman said some people often ask where the money for Family Cards and Farmers' Cards would come from. "I want to tell them that we will no longer allow people's money to be siphoned abroad," he said. He said public funds will be used for the welfare of citizens and the development of the country. "People's money will be spent on the people. It will be used for the country's development and for changing the fate of its citizens. So, there will be no shortage of money, Insha-Allah," the Prime Minister said. The programme, organised by the Ministry of Social Welfare, began with recitations from the Holy Quran and other religious scriptures. The national anthem and the BNP party song were also played. The Prime Minister personally handed over Family Cards to 10 women representing beneficiary families before formally inaugurating the third phase of the programme by pressing a button. He also distributed grants of Tk 200,000 each as housing support for tea workers, scholarships for children of tea workers and financial assistance cheques for people with disabilities. Referring to the government's welfare initiatives, Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh is both the first and last address of its citizens and the government's sole objective is to improve the lives of the people. “We have to build this country ourselves. The 40 crore hands of our 20 crore people must be turned into productive hands. Only then can we transform Bangladesh,” he said. The Prime Minister also warned people against what he described as attempts to spread misinformation about government’s welfare programmes. Addressing those who question the funding of the Family Card and Farmers’ Card programmes, he said the assistance distributed among tea workers, students and people with disabilities on Wednesday was being provided from public funds. Referring to allocations for Family Card and Farmers’ Card programmes in the proposed 2026-27 national budget, Tarique Rahman criticised those describing the budget as anti-people despite the government's decision to remove duties on 60 essential products. “You have seen that though we have allocated funds in this budget for ordinary working people, some have refused to accept it. We have allocated funds for mothers through the Family Card programme, for farmers through the Farmers’ Card scheme, for persons with disabilities, for students and for improving healthcare services,” he said. The Prime Minister lamented that the opposition is comparing the budget to “chanachur”, saying such remarks undermine efforts to improve people's lives. “This is a people’s budget. Through these allocations, we want to change the lives of our citizens. We have set aside funds for healthcare, for farmers and for ensuring that our children receive the best possible education. Yet some describe it as an anti-people budget,” he said. Tarique Rahman also noted that the government has withdrawn duties on 60 essential commodities but said a political party was still portraying the budget as anti-people. “When a budget contains measures for the welfare of citizens and relief for consumers, can those who oppose it truly claim to be friends of the people? The answer is no,” he said, urging people to remain alert to what he termed efforts to create confusion and instability, both inside and outside Parliament. “If those who want to create unrest get the opportunity, it will become difficult to continue programmes like Family Card, support for persons with disabilities, assistance for poor students and tax relief on essential commodities,” Tarique Rahman said. He stressed that public unity is essential to sustaining development and protecting democracy. “If people remain united, no conspiracy can succeed and no one will be able to undermine democracy in Bangladesh,” he said. The Prime Minister also claimed that forces opposed to democracy had historically worked together despite public differences, while the BNP had always stood by the people. “The greatest strength of the BNP is the people. That is why we always say that the people are the source of all power,” he said. Recalling past political struggles, Tarique Rahman said late BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had never left the people during difficult times. “Bangladesh was her first address and her last address. We are the soldiers of Khaleda Zia,” he said. State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin, Moulvibazar district BNP Convener Faizul Karim Mayun, lawmaker Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, Additional Secretary Kamal Uddin Biswas and beneficiaries Shiuly Rani Das and Wajeda Begum also spoke at the programme with Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister AZM Zahid Hossain in the chair.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the government will make all possible efforts to lower or rationalise the Hajj package prices for 2027 as part of its plan to develop an affordable Hajj system. “The government has a plan to reduce the cost of Hajj in the future. In our election manifesto it has been pledged to develop an affordable, accessible, humane and expatriate-friendly Hajj system for religious citizens. State and diplomatic initiatives will be taken to reduce the cost of performing Hajj,” he said. The Prime Minister made the remarks while replying to a starred question from opposition lawmaker Salah Uddin (Gazipur-4) in Parliament. He said Hajj is managed through a bilateral arrangement between Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh government with expenses divided into two components. Tarique Rahman said the three-fourths of the total cost is  determined by the Saudi authorities, while the remaining one-fourth of the expenditure is incurred in Bangladesh, mainly covering airfares and other local expenses. He said the minimum Hajj package for 2026 was fixed at Tk 467,167, including the cost of Qurbani. Of the amount, Tk 300,797 was spent on the Saudi Arabia portion while the rest was spent in Bangladesh  including Tk 154,830 for airfare. The PM said the minimum Hajj package in 2025 was Tk 478,242, but it was reduced by Tk 11,075 for 2026, allowing pilgrims to benefit from the decrease. “Considering the global situation and the expenses announced for the Saudi segment, the government will make every effort to reduce or rationalise the Hajj package prices for 2027 for the benefit of common religious Muslims,” he said.

Urging India to stop brutal expulsions, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Wednesday said both Bangladesh and Indian governments should ensure that border management never again comes at the cost of basic human dignity. The New York-based rights body said the Indian authorities are forcibly expelling ‘ethnic Bengali residents, mostly Muslims’ from West Bengal state, to Bangladesh without basic due process. “No one, whatever their nationality, should be left to spend nights in an open field between two lines of armed border guards,” said Meenakshi Ganguly, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. Ganguly said the Indian authorities are cruelly dumping families into Bangladesh or leaving them stranded at the border, ignoring their basic human rights. “The government (of India) should stop unlawfully expelling people, ensure procedural safeguards, engage with Bangladeshi authorities to verify citizenship, and end this dismaying animosity toward Muslims.” Bangladeshi border guards have reported that since June 1, 2026, they have foiled 21 attempts by the BSF to push more than 200 people, including children, into Bangladesh’s border districts. The chief minister of India’s West Bengal state, Suvendu Adhikari, who took office after the Hindu-majoritarian Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the March elections, said that the government under his “detect, delete and deport” policy had detained hundreds of “Bangladeshi infiltrators” and forced nearly 5,000 people “to go back.” The Human Rights Watch interviewed nine people who witnessed Indian border security troops bring groups of people to the border at night and push them through cuts in the barbed wire fencing into Bangladeshi territory. In several cases, Indian border guards eventually allowed people to return after the Bangladesh border force denied them entry, it said in a statement. Just ahead of March elections in West Bengal, India’s election commission had carried out a hurried and controversial revision of voter lists that dropped over nine million names, triggering threats of detention and deportation, said HRW. A flawed and discriminatory citizenship verification process in Assam state in 2019 had already left over 1.9 million people stateless and thousands of Bengali-speaking residents of the state have been held in detention centers, while many were expelled unlawfully. The BJP chief minister in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has repeatedly lashed out at Bengali-speaking Muslims in the state, calling them “illegal immigrants.” Recently he said: “We take them to a convenient location near the border, and literally push them across the border. Now, such an atmosphere has been created in Assam that several illegal Bangladeshis have started going back on their own.” Indian officials contend that numerous Bangladeshis are living in India illegally and have offered to help them return voluntarily. Genuinely voluntary repatriation, including with assistance, is compatible with international human rights standards, but India should not coerce repatriation or forcibly expel people, the HRW said. “Nor should they, as some of those interviewed allege, strip them of documentation, money, and personal belongings.” Bangladeshi authorities have said they will not accept people pushed across the border outside legal channels, insisting that any returns must follow proper verification and established repatriation procedures, according to the HRW. Leaving people without food, water, shelter, or medical care may amount to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment, it said. The Indian government should ensure access to fundamental procedural safeguards for anyone subject to expulsion. This includes access to full information about the grounds for deportation, the right to legal representation, and an opportunity to appeal a decision to expel them. Expelling or stranding children violates the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which obligates states to respect children’s right to preserve their nationality and prohibits their arbitrary deprivation of liberty. India and Bangladesh have bilateral mechanisms that provide for verification of nationality and orderly transfer of nationals. Indian authorities’ circumvention of these procedures has repeatedly left people trapped between two border forces in conditions that violate their fundamental rights, Human Rights Watch said.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday approved procurement proposals worth more than Tk 704.7 crore including the import of urea fertiliser and sulphur for the country's agricultural and industrial needs. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the committee atSecretariat with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair. Import of 40,000 metric tonnes of urea fertiliser through the Direct Procurement Method (DPM) at a cost of Tk 348.56 crore was among the proposals. The proposal submitted by the Ministry of Industries involves the purchase of urea from UAE-based Delta Star Trading FZ-LLC through its local agent Ibedita Trading, Dhaka. The per-metric-tonne price has been fixed at US$707.01. The committee also recommended approval of another fertiliser import proposal under a government-to-government arrangement. Under the proposal, 25,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular urea will be imported from Saudi Arabia's SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company . The Ministry of Industries estimated the procurement cost at Tk 185.13 crore, with the fertiliser to be supplied at a price of US$600.83 per metric tonne. The committee approved another proposal for importing 15,000 metric tonnes of rock sulphur/bright yellow sulphur for TSP Complex Limited (TSPCL) at a cost of Tk 171.01 crore. The proposal was also submitted by the Ministry of Industries, with Seychelles-based M/s Fabsco Construction Limited selected as the supplier. According to the proposal, the sulphur may be sourced from a range of internationally recognised producers and refiners, including Formosa Petrochemical Corporation of Taiwan, Turkmengas of Turkmenistan, Mongstad Refinery of Norway, ADNOC of the UAE, Duqm Refinery of Oman, SOMO of Iraq and Reliance Industries of India, among others.

A disciplined Australian bowling performance, led by Adam Zampa and debutant Joel Davies, bundled Bangladesh out for a modest 131 in 19 overs in the first T20I at Chattogram on Wednesday. A Chattogram court on Wednesday sentenced prime accused Abir Ali to death for killing five-year-old girl Alina Islam Ayat four years back. Judge of Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Court-6 Muhammad Ali Akkas handed down the punishment in presence of the convict. According to the prosecution, Ayat went missing on November 14, 2022 on her way to a mosque where she used to learn Arabic at Bandartila area in Chattogram. The victim’s father, Sohel Rana, lodged a general diary with the local police station after she went missing. Abir, a former tenant of the victim’s family, kidnapped the girl for ransom and strangled the girl to death as he failed to secure a place to keep her hostage. She later chopped her body into six pieces after taking to a residence on Akmal Ali Road in the city and dumped the body wrapped in two bags in the sea in the city’s Kattali area. Ayat’s body parts were found from different parts of the city on November 30 and December 1, 2022. On November 9, 2023, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) officer of the case Monoj Kumar Dey submitted chargesheet against Abir Ali.  

A young man, who was accused in six cases, was hacked to death by miscreants at Dhalirgati village in Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore district early Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Riaz Hossain, 29, son of Mansur Ali of the village. He was wanted in six cases, including that of robbery, mugging and drugs, police said. Officer-in-Charge of Abhaynagar Police Station Md Nuruzzaman said a group of miscreants waylaid Riaz at the Dhalirgati Govt Primary School ground around 2:00am. Later, they beat and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him injured. On information, police rushed to the spot and took Riaz to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Medical Officer at the hospital Dr Mohammad Sabuj said he died due to excessive bleeding.  

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday approved a proposal to extend the existing contract for the online collection of motor vehicle (MV) taxes and fees for the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). The recommendation came at a meeting of the committee held at the Secretariat with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair. According to official sources, the proposal was submitted by the Road Transport and Highways Division to facilitate the continuation and expansion of services related to the collection of MV taxes and fees through the online banking platform. The original contract value stood at Tk 218.71 crore. A variation amounting to Tk 21.43 crore has been proposed, raising the revised contract value to Tk 240.14 crore, which is 9.8 percent higher than the original contract amount. The recommended contractor is Computer Network Systems (CNS) Limited.

Appreciating Bangladesh's rapid economic growth and investment-friendly environment, South Korean Ambassador Kim Ji-joon on Wednesday expressed his country's interest in investing in Bangladesh's electronics manufacturing and technology sectors. He also highlighted South Korea's interest in expanding cooperation and investment in renewable energy, information technology, manufacturing, and other promising sectors. The Ambassador discussed the issues during a meeting with the Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon. During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to further strengthen the longstanding friendly relations and enhance bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and South Korea. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said both sides emphasised the importance of deepening collaboration in trade, investment, technology, industrialization, infrastructure development, human resource development, and skills enhancement. Humaiun Kobir praised the growing economic and development partnership between Bangladesh and South Korea and underscored the need to boost trade and investment, facilitate technology transfer, and further strengthen industrial cooperation. He welcomed increased South Korean investment in Bangladesh and assured the government's full support in facilitating such initiatives. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close cooperation on issues of mutual interest and expressed optimism about elevating Bangladesh-South Korea relations to new heights.

Four more children have died from measles-like symptoms in 24 hours until 8:00 am on Wednesday, raising Bangladesh’s combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 661. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest four deaths have been classified as suspected measles fatalities. With the latest update, the number of suspected measles deaths has risen to 568, while the number of laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remained unchanged at 93. A total of 966 new suspected measles cases were reported during the 24-hour period, taking the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 88,895. Meanwhile, 111 new confirmed measles cases were recorded, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 10,634. Since March 15, a total of 73,277 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised across the country, of whom 69,688 have recovered, according to DGHS data.

The tax and price structure imposed on tobacco and tobacco products in the proposed national budget for FY 2026–27 is insufficient to achieve the objectives of public health protection and revenue generation, said speakers. They warned that the marginal increase in the price of low-tier cigarettes and the unchanged prices and tax rates on bidis, zarda, and gul will effectively reduce the real prices of these products, making tobacco products more affordable and potentially increasing tobacco use among young people and low-income populations. These observations were made at a post-budget press conference on the national budget for FY 2026–27, organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission at the Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday. The speakers noted that approximately 75 percent of the country's cigarette market is occupied by low-tier cigarettes, whose primary consumers are poor and young people. The proposed budget increases the price of a pack of 10 low-tier cigarettes by only BDT 2, setting the price at BDT 62—an increase of just 3.33 percent. Both per capita income growth and inflation rates are significantly higher than this increase and  the real price of low-tier cigarettes will decline, leading to increased consumption, they said. On the other hand, if the low and medium cigarette tiers were merged and the price of 10 sticks was set at BDT 100, a specific supplementary duty of BDT 4 per pack was imposed, and the prices of all tobacco products were increased, it would be possible to generate approximately BDT 44 billion in additional revenue compared to the current fiscal year. At the same time, nearly 400,000 premature deaths could be prevented in the long term. The speakers further stated that although the prices of medium, high, and premium-tier cigarettes have been increased to some extent, no fundamental reform has been introduced in the tax structure. Consequently, a significant portion of the price increase will translate into additional profits for tobacco companies, enabling them to further expand their tobacco businesses, posing a serious threat to public health. The proposed budget also leaves the prices and tax rates on bidis, zarda, and gul unchanged, making these inexpensive products even more affordable and accessible, thereby increasing health risks, particularly for women and low-income populations. Furthermore, by imposing taxes on nicotine pouches and heated tobacco products without considering the Ministry of Health's recommendation to prohibit these products, the government has effectively legitimized these emerging products, creating the risk of expanding new forms of nicotine addiction. The speakers also highlighted that more than 35 percent of adults in Bangladesh use tobacco and that tobacco-related diseases cause nearly 200,000 deaths annually. The economic cost of tobacco-related health and environmental damage is estimated at approximately BDT 87 billion per year. The speakers at the event included Masudul Haque, President of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF); M.M. Badshah, General Secretary of the Crime Reporters Association (CRA); and Iqbal Masud, Director of the Health Sector at Dhaka Ahsania Mission. The keynote paper was presented by Shariful Islam, Coordinator of the Tobacco Control Project. The speakers demanded that the final budget for FY 2026–27 include reforms to the tobacco tax and price structure, the merger of low and medium cigarette tiers with increased prices, the introduction of a specific tax system, higher taxes and prices on bidis, zarda, and gul, and a permanent ban on all emerging nicotine products, including nicotine pouches and heated tobacco products. They emphasised that these measures are essential to protect public health, safeguard the younger generation from nicotine addiction, and capitalize on the opportunity for increased government revenue.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday approved three separate proposals including the import of urea fertiliser from Russia under the direct procurement method and agreements related to a Chinese-backed economic zone in Chattogram. The approvals came at a meeting of the committee following consideration of proposals submitted by the Industries Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office. Finance Minuster Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury chaired the meeting held at  Secretariat. The fertiliser import proposal was placed by the Industries Ministry. The committee also approved the signing two agreements with Bangladesh CEIZ Company Limited, a Special Purpose Company (SPC) formed for the establishment of the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) at Anwara upazila in Chattogram district. The proposal, submitted by the Prime Minister’s Office, sought approval for the Development Agreement and the Land Lease Agreement to be signed with the company. The Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone is expected to attract foreign investment, facilitate industrialisation and generate employment opportunities in the region. The project is considered one of the majoBr angladesh-China economic cooperation initiatives. The committee also gave nod to another proposal submitted by the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the establishment of a Free Trade Zone. The proposal concerns approval of the portion recommended by the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) based on a report submitted by the committee formed to examine matters related to the establishment of a free trade zone.

How children respond to simple facial expressions such as smiles and frowns may provide early clues about their risk of developing depression, according to a new study by researchers at Binghamton University. The research found that depression can affect the way children pay attention to emotional faces, and these patterns differ depending on whether they have a family history of depression. Researchers at Binghamton University's Mood Disorders Institute are studying how depression develops during childhood and adolescence. They hope that identifying early warning signs could help doctors and families detect and address mental health problems before they become more serious. “Many of the risk factors we study are still developing during childhood,” said Brandon Gibb. “This gives us a chance to identify problems early rather than waiting until they become more established.” Previous studies have shown that people with depression often pay more attention to sad facial expressions. However, scientists have long debated whether this attention pattern causes depression or is a result of it. The new study is the first to examine how depressive symptoms and attention to emotional faces may influence each other over time in children. Lead researcher Kelly Gair said the study explored how attention patterns and depressive symptoms continuously affect one another as children grow. The research followed 242 children and their mothers over a two-year period. Participants were assessed every six months. During each assessment, children were shown pairs of faces on a screen. One face displayed a neutral expression, while the other showed a happy, sad or angry expression. Researchers used eye-tracking technology to measure which faces attracted the children's attention and how long they looked at them. The findings revealed different patterns based on family history. Among children whose mothers had experienced major depression, increasing depressive symptoms were linked to greater attention to sad faces. Researchers said that as these children became more depressed, they appeared to have greater difficulty shifting their attention away from negative emotional cues. Gibb suggested that children exposed to more sadness at home may become especially sensitive to sad facial expressions when they experience depressive symptoms themselves. For children whose mothers had no history of depression, the pattern was different. Instead of focusing more on sad faces, they spent less time looking at happy faces when their depressive symptoms increased. Researchers believe this may reflect the loss of a protective factor, as attention to positive emotions could help buffer against depression. The team is continuing to follow the children as they enter adolescence to determine whether these attention patterns increase the likelihood of developing clinical depression later in life. The findings were published in the scientific journal Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science. Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) on Wednesday cautioned that the government's ambitious revenue mobilisation target for fiscal year 2026-27 could expose taxpayers to harassment at the field level as the National Board of Revenue (NBR) collected only 65 percent of its revised target in the outgoing fiscal year. MCCI President Kamran T. Rahman raised the concern while delivering the welcome address at a post-budget discussion jointly organised by MCCI, Standard Chartered Bangladesh and the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) at the M. Anis Ud Dowla Conference Hall of MCCI's Gulshan office in the city. The budget has set a revenue collection target of Tk 6.95 lakh crore, which represents a growth of over 18.2 percent compared to the current fiscal year's revised target. “NBR managed to collect only Tk 3.27 lakh crore, or 65 percent of the revised target, up to April of FY2025-26,” Kamran said. “Achieving the new revenue target without comprehensive structural reforms will be extremely difficult, and the pressure to do so may lead to harassment of taxpayers at the field level.” He, however, acknowledged that the proposed budget, the first full-year budget of the newly elected government contains several business-friendly reform proposals, including modernisation of tax and revenue administration, digitalisation, and ease of doing business measures. The MCCI president stressed that the key objective of the day's forum was not to examine isolated budget proposals, but to explore how the budget can be successfully implemented by broadening the tax base rather than imposing additional burdens on specific sectors or existing taxpayers. “The national budget is not merely a statement of government income and expenditure, it is a reflection of a country's economic priorities, development strategy, and future direction,” Kamran said. The budget comes at a time when the global economy continues to grapple with geopolitical uncertainty, trade tensions, and structural economic challenges, he added. He said MCCI remains committed to fostering open and constructive dialogue among the government, private sector, and other stakeholders on key national economic issues. Kamran expressed hope that the deliberations from the forum, held ahead of the budget's final approval in parliament, would enrich the policymaking process and provide actionable guidance to the relevant authorities. 

Two separate probe committees have been formed in connection with the killing of a seven-year-old girl presumably after rape in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat district on Tuesday night. The local administration formed a four-member committee headed by Additional District Magistrate, said Superintendent of Rangpur Police Md Asaduzzaman. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days. Besides, police formed a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Rangpur police in this connection. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days. Superintendent  of Police Asaduzzaman said  Bidhan Chandra confessed to killing of Nandini. “He admitted that the murder took place out of anger stemming from a family dispute. As a result, no remand was sought for him. He also gave a confessional statement before a court,” said SP Asaduzzaman. Although the accused claimed the victim was not raped the matter will be ensured after receiving the autopsy report and completion of the investigation, the SP added. Earlier on Tuesday, police recovered the body of the girl, Nandini Kanta Roy, from a maize field at Falimari village under Bhelabari union, a day after she went missing. Police arrested Bidhan Chandra Roy and his father Ranjit Kumar from the spot in connection with the incident. Nalini Kanta Roy, father of the victim, filed a murder case on Tuesday naming three people including Bidhan and his father Ranjit. Bidhan’s mother Sabitri was also made accused in the case. A clash broke out between police and some agitated villagers when police were taking the two suspects to the police station from the scene, leaving 30 people including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) injured. During the violence, seven vehicles, including those used by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) were vandalised. The agitated villagers reportedly confined the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and other officials. The situation later turned volatile, prompting police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel to disperse the crowd by firing sound grenades and take the detained suspects- Bidhan and his father- to the police station. Nandini went missing on Monday. Her body, packed in a sack, was recovered from a nearby maize field on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, the body of Nandini was handed over to the family members of the deceased on Tuesday night. Later he was buried at a graveyard.

A 24-year-old worker of a hotel died as the hotel owner’s son allegedly hit him with a hammer at Khamar Intersection in Rangpur city on Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Shaon, resident of Nurer Chak of Aditmari upazila of the district. Sanatan Chakraborty, deputy commissioner of Rangpur DB police, said police arrested Mizanur Rahman Monu, son of hotel owner Amir Hossain, in this connection. During interrogation Mizanur admitted that he had an argument with Shaon over spitting betel leaf residue near a utensil storage area and  following the dispute he hit Shaon with a hammer at night, said police. Meanwhile, family members of Misanur claimed that he has been suffering from mental health problems for a long time. Legal steps will be taken after getting complaint from the family members of the deceased, said police.

Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) on Wednesday said the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 has taken several commendable steps to promote renewable energy but fossil fuels continue to enjoy discriminatory fiscal advantages, potentially undermining the country's energy transition objectives. CPD Senior Research Associate Helen Mashiyat Preoty came up with the observation while presenting  a paper titled "Proposed National Budget for FY2026-27: What is there on the Power and Energy Sector?" CPD Research Director Khondaker Golam Moazzem chaired the presentation event at its Dhanmondi office. The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources received a total allocation of Tk 17,345 crore in the proposed budget, a modest 2.3 percent increase from the revised budget of FY2025-26. Of this, the development budget stands at Tk 17,193 crore, while operational expenditure is Tk 152 crore, up 7.8 percent. The think-tank flagged a worrying downward trend, the sector's share in the total national budget has declined steadily from 6.87 percent in FY2015-16 to just 1.85 percent in the proposed FY2026-27 budget. The Power Division received Tk 14,996 crore, a 3.9 percent decline from the revised allocation, while the Energy and Mineral Resources Division saw a sharp 72 percent jump to Tk 2,349 crore, driven largely by increased development expenditure. CPD acknowledged that for the first time, the proposed budget has offered substantial fiscal support to solar-based electricity generation. The government has proposed a zero percent tax rate on the solar power sector until 2035, a 5 percent tax rebate for consumers paying solar electricity bills, and elimination of import duty, regulatory duty, supplementary duty, and advance tax on essential solar components up to June 2030. Tax incidence on assembled solar panels has been proposed to drop from 28.7 percent to 22.2 percent, while that on lithium-ion batteries, critical for energy storage, is set to come down sharply from 61.8 percent to 26.3 percent. However, CPD cautioned that the benefits are tied to a restrictive list of conditionalities, primarily benefitting select solar power generation companies and firms operating under the RESCO model. This effectively excludes 63 percent of the country's electricity consumers, including residential users, small business owners, and rural solar irrigation farmers. “The proposed budget will encourage the private sector to move towards renewable energy transition, however, restructuring the fiscal treatment may be needed for end-user benefits,” the paper noted. Despite the government's stated ambition to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuel, CPD pointed out that LNG imports continue to enjoy full VAT exemption, resulting in a Total Tax Incidence (TTI) of only 9.5 percent for key LNG products. Besides, coal imports by power plants will also continue to enjoy concessionary duty benefits extended until June 2030. CPD recommended that the full VAT exemption on LNG be withdrawn and VAT be restored to 15 percent, arguing that the current arrangement artificially keeps LNG competitive and causes significant revenue foregone for the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The think-tank also raised concern over the budget speech's renewed emphasis on domestic coal exploration, including setting a production target of 6 lakh metric tonnes for FY2026-27 and undertaking new projects for the Barapukuria Second Phase and Dighipara Coal Field. “Such fiscal favours given to dirty coal is nothing but a hindrance towards energy transition,” the paper stated. Analysing the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for FY2026-27, CPD found that fossil fuel projects account for 98 percent of total generation-sector allocations, compared to a mere 2 percent for renewable energy projects. In the current ADP, only five renewable energy-related projects received allocations, three under the Power Division and two under the Energy Division. Notably, no new solar or renewable energy projects have been added in the current ADP, a development CPD described as concerning. Eleven renewable energy projects were left unapproved, including seven solar projects with a combined capacity of 640 MW, three grid modernisation projects, and a 25 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) pilot project. CPD warned this trajectory makes the government's target of achieving 20 percent renewable energy by 2030 extremely difficult, as it would require installing 1,662 MW of solar capacity per annum between January 2026 and December 2030. CPD said grid and transmission equipment continues to face some of the highest tax burdens in the energy sector, with TTI ranging from 33.6 percent to as high as 93.2 percent. The budget has proposed tariff reductions for only two components out of the full range of grid infrastructure items. Critical assets such as transformers, conductors, towers, and meters remain subject to multiple layers of taxation. The think-tank urged the government to reduce import, customs, supplementary, and regulatory duties on all grid infrastructure components to zero, noting that doing so would lower the TTI by roughly 30 percentage points and reduce the cost of grid expansion needed for renewable integration. The budget has significantly reduced the tax burden on electric vehicles (EVs), with import duties reduced from 93 percent to 64-80 percent depending on vehicle price and type. Import duties on EV charging equipment have been brought down from 39.75 percent to zero, a move CPD described as highly commendable. Annual income taxes on EVs have also been drastically reduced from Tk 2 lakh uniformly to between Tk 25,000 and Tk 1 lakh based on power capacity. Conversely, taxes on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have been increased to discourage their use, with one category of reconditioned cars now facing a TTI of 159.8 percent. CPD expressed disappointment that the budget has given little emphasis to solar irrigation for marginal farmers. The budget speech only mentions the installation of 98 solar-powered irrigation pumps and 27 solar-powered dug-wells. One solar irrigation project with a 40 percent completion rate received no allocation in the current ADP. “There is nothing much for solar irrigation in the proposed national budget FY2026-27,” the paper concluded. The budget proposes Tk 37,000 crore for electricity subsidy, up from Tk 36,000 crore in the revised FY2026 budget, primarily to offset Bangladesh Power Development Board's losses from purchasing electricity from IPPs, rental, and quick rental plants. CPD warned that while the government has signaled plans to rationalise electricity subsidies in coming years, the burden must not be passed on to consumers through tariff hikes. Instead, the government should phase out capacity payments to fossil fuel plants. CPD called on the government to increase allocations in the revised budget for projects nearing completion; approve more renewable energy projects through the revised ADP; shift NBR's fiscal approach from a restrictive entity-based model to an open, component-based zero-tariff framework; introduce targeted subsidies for solar irrigation farmers; and incorporate dedicated green grants for energy transition and smart grid development in the national budget.  

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived at Sreemangal in Moulvibazar on Wednesday afternoon to distribute Family Cards among local residents. Every day hundreds of anxious parents arrive at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute (BSHI) with critically ill children, hoping for treatment that could save young lives. But the country’s largest specialised paediatric hospital has long been under pressure, struggling with rising patient loads and limited capacity for advanced care. Now, the government has undertaken a Tk 344.02 crore expansion project aimed at transforming the hospital into a more advanced and comprehensive centre for specialised child healthcare. The proposed “Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute Expansion Project-2”, scheduled for implementation between July 2026 and June 2028, seeks to expand infrastructure, introduce cutting-edge treatment facilities and strengthen specialised services that remain limited across Bangladesh. Responding to Growing Demand The expansion comes at a critical time when demand for specialised paediatric treatment is rising steadily due to population growth, improved disease detection and greater public awareness of children’s healthcare needs. According to project documents, the expansion will include the addition of 100 new beds and six cabins, five state-of-the-art operation theatres and nearly 1,400 advanced medical equipment. The project also envisages the procurement of more than 1,700 furniture and the introduction of extensive hospital automation through 36 software packages, aimed at improving patient management and service delivery. At the heart of the initiative is the vertical expansion of the hospital’s existing C-Block at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The building will be extended from the fourth floor to the ninth floor, creating an additional 4,461 square metres of floor space without requiring any new land acquisition. Planning Commission officials said the site already possesses the structural foundation necessary for vertical expansion, reducing implementation risks and avoiding the delays often associated with land acquisition and utility relocation. Bringing Advanced Care Within Reach The expansion will facilitate the introduction and strengthening of paediatric urology, kidney transplantation, surgical oncology and orthopaedic surgery services. For many families, these are treatments that currently require referrals abroad or lengthy waits at a handful of specialised facilities. The hospital is also set to establish a comprehensive paediatric cardiac care programme, including a catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab), cardiac intensive care beds, dedicated operation theatres and post-operative recovery units. Congenital heart diseases remain among the leading causes of childhood illness requiring specialised intervention. Health experts believe expanded cardiac facilities could significantly improve survival rates while reducing treatment costs for families. Strengthening Diagnostics The project further seeks to improve diagnostic accuracy and speed through the installation of advanced imaging technologies, including CT scan and MRI facilities. Such equipment plays a crucial role in diagnosing neurological disorders, cancers, congenital abnormalities and other complex childhood diseases. Doctors say delayed diagnosis often contributes to poor treatment outcomes, particularly for patients arriving from remote districts. Reducing Medical Migration Bangladesh has made notable progress in child health indicators over the past decades, including reductions in child mortality and improvements in immunisation coverage. However, access to specialised paediatric treatment remains uneven, forcing many families to seek expensive care abroad, particularly in neighbouring countries. Health sector officials believe the planned expansion of BSHI could help bridge that gap by making advanced treatment available domestically. A Legacy Nearly Five Decades in the Making The story of Bangladesh Shishu Hospital is closely intertwined with the country’s post-independence healthcare development. Founded in 1972 by noted philanthropist Prof Tofayel Ahmed with support from voluntary organisations and the government, the institution began modestly with a 50-bed inpatient facility operating from a rented house in Dhanmondi and outpatient services from a tent in Sukrabad. What started as Bangladesh’s first specialised children’s hospital gradually evolved into the nation’s premier paediatric healthcare and training centre. A landmark decision by the National Economic Council in 1974 paved the way for the construction of a dedicated 250-bed hospital, later designed for expansion to 500 beds. The institution moved to its permanent Sher-e-Bangla Nagar campus in 1977. Over the decades, the hospital expanded beyond patient care to become a major centre for medical education and research through the Bangladesh Institute of Child Health (BICH), established in 1983. Today, it trains specialists in paediatrics, neonatology, nephrology, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, haemato-oncology and paediatric surgery, while also producing skilled nurses and allied health professionals. In 2021, Parliament elevated the institution’s status through the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital Act, formally transforming Dhaka Shishu Hospital into Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute. Investing in the Future The government’s Election Manifesto 2026 places particular emphasis on strengthening maternal and child healthcare services, and the new expansion project aligns closely with that commitment. Beyond bricks and mortar, the investment represents a broader recognition that specialised healthcare for children is essential to the country’s future human development. For families arriving from distant districts with critically ill children, the expansion promises something more tangible: shorter waiting times, improved access to advanced treatment and the possibility of receiving world-class care closer to home. A college teacher was found dead near Shahagola Railway Station in Atrai upazila of Naogaon district on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Neyamul Bashir, 48, a teacher at Boroshimla Women's College and a resident of Chakramchandra Moholla in the district town. Apart from teaching, he was also involved in the Hajj business. Being informed, police recovered Bashir's body from Shimulia in the morning, said Mahbub Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Atrai Police Station. The body bore several injury marks, including injuries to the head, said OC. Habibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Santahar Government Railway Police (GRP), said the body was sent to Naogaon 250-bed General Hospital for an autopsy. "Those involved in the killing will be identified and brought to justice under the law once a case is filed in this regard," he said. However, Mizanur Rahman, the victim's brother, alleged that miscreants killed him over a previous enmity.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast rains  in parts of the country  in 24 hours commencing 9 am on Wednesday. According to the latest Met Office bulletin, rains may occur at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna & Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram & Sylhet divisions. Meanwhile, a mild heat wave is sweeping over Khulna division as well as Manikganj, Nilphamari and Rajshahi districts, and it may continue, the Met Office added.

A striking cave-like installation has opened on Paris’ oldest bridge, temporarily turning the historic structure over the River Seine into a dark, immersive art space filled with sound, scent and light. For weeks, a black, mountain-like structure had covered the Pont Neuf, raising curiosity among passers-by. It finally opened on Monday evening, allowing the public to step inside the artwork. Once inside, visitors are met with a dramatic shift in atmosphere. The air carries the smell of damp earth, stone and smoke, while the sounds of low electronic pulses echo through the structure. Beneath it, the bridge’s old cobblestones remain visible underfoot, reinforcing the sense of walking through another world. The installation, called the Pont Neuf Cavern, has been created by French street artist JR (artist), often described as the “French Banksy.” It is open free of charge and will remain accessible 24 hours a day until June 28. Built mainly from printed fabric and air, the work rises about 18 metres above the Seine, transforming the centuries-old bridge into a temporary artificial cave. Visitors described the experience as disorienting yet captivating. “It feels like the city has disappeared,” said one visitor, noting that although the river remains just outside, the interior feels like stepping into an ancient landscape. A key feature of the installation is its carefully designed scent environment. Olfactory artist Sarah Bouasse created shifting smells inspired by compounds found in rain-soaked soil. The scent changes as visitors move through the space, from wet earth to warmer, smokier tones. Many visitors said the experience changed the way they moved across the bridge. “Today I felt the stones under my feet. And smelled them too,” said one retiree, adding that it made him feel like a child again. The sound design was created by Thomas Bangalter, known from the electronic duo Daft Punk. His audio installation adds deep rumbles, echoes and rhythmic pulses that intensify the cave-like effect. Completed in 1607, the Pont Neuf — ironically meaning “New Bridge” — is the oldest standing bridge in Paris. The installation encourages visitors to experience the landmark not just visually, but through smell, sound and touch. The project also pays tribute to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who famously wrapped the bridge in fabric in 1985, attracting millions of visitors. Unlike that earlier bright installation, JR’s version explores darkness, guiding visitors through a shadowed passage before they re-emerge into daylight on the other side. The experience can also be enhanced through a smartphone-based augmented reality feature developed with tech company Snap, which adds digital bats, visual traces and a virtual dancer to the space. JR has linked the concept to Plato’s allegory of the cave, suggesting modern people are similarly influenced by digital screens and algorithms shaping perception. Visitors said the installation offers a rare pause in daily urban life. “Paris needs things that make people stop,” said one visitor. When the exhibition ends, the structure will be dismantled and its materials reused or recycled, returning the bridge to its normal state as traffic flows again over the historic Seine crossing.

The Trump administration has stepped in to support one of Elon Musk’s companies in a legal battle over alleged air pollution from a large artificial intelligence data center in the US state of Mississippi. The Justice Department has asked a court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the NAACP and other groups, which accuse Musk’s xAI unit of operating dozens of natural gas turbines without proper permits. The plaintiffs say the facility, which powers a $20 billion AI data center, is located near homes, schools and churches and is posing serious health risks to nearby communities in northern Mississippi and Memphis. In its filing late Monday, the department argued that the power plant is essential for running an AI facility that is “critical to the economy” and important for US military needs. It also said the state of Mississippi, not the federal government, had determined that no permit was required for the plant. A senior Justice Department official said enforcing federal law ultimately rests with the executive branch, not private groups, adding that the move aims to protect national security and support American innovation and energy development. The case highlights the Trump administration’s push to prioritise artificial intelligence development as part of its broader economic and national security strategy, while easing environmental regulations on businesses. President Donald Trump has maintained close ties with Musk, who previously led a federal cost-cutting initiative and remains one of his major political and financial supporters. The legal intervention comes shortly after Musk’s space company SpaceX saw a major stock market debut, further increasing its valuation, partly driven by large federal contracts. The lawsuit, filed in April, claims that xAI has been running multiple portable gas turbines without required air pollution controls, in violation of the US Clean Air Act, which mandates permits for industrial emissions. UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited Haiti on Tuesday as the country faces worsening gang violence that has displaced millions and left thousands dead or homeless. According to new UN figures, around 2,300 people have been killed in Haiti so far this year, while another 100 have been kidnapped. The violence has forced about 1.5 million people from their homes. Among the latest kidnapping victims is James Boyard, chief of staff at the Defense Ministry, who was abducted last week in what was considered one of the safer areas of the capital. Guterres arrived in Port-au-Prince for a one-day visit days after a violent weekend in the seaside slum of Cité Soleil, where more than 30 people were killed, injured or reported missing, according to a local human rights group. His convoy passed through areas heavily damaged by years of gang violence, including abandoned homes, destroyed businesses and buildings scarred by gunfire. Graffiti on walls reflected public frustration, with messages supporting police and condemning the powerful gang coalition known as Viv Ansanm, which is believed to control about 70% of Port-au-Prince. The UN chief also saw large numbers of displaced people living in makeshift shelters under tarpaulins and temporary structures. More than 300,000 people have been displaced by gang violence in Port-au-Prince alone, the highest number ever recorded. The UN's migration agency said over 18,000 people fled Cité Soleil in May. "Haiti's displacement crisis is entering an even more alarming phase," said Gregoire Goodstein, the International Organization for Migration's chief in Haiti. During his visit, Guterres toured the headquarters of a newly formed international force that is expected to begin operations in the coming weeks. The force was approved by the UN Security Council and will replace the previous UN-backed mission led by Kenyan police, which struggled with limited funding and manpower. Troops from Jamaica, Chad, El Salvador and Guatemala have joined the force, although total deployment remains below 1,000 personnel. One resident described the cramped conditions, while others said only one meal a day was guaranteed. "We're going to do our best," Guterres told a group of women during a private discussion. Outside the shelter, some residents voiced frustration and demanded a safe return to their communities. Wendy Cejour, who has lived at the shelter with his family for about 18 months, said conditions remained extremely difficult. "As long as we're alive we have hope, but things are difficult," he said, calling for the chance to return home. Ahead of the visit, Human Rights Watch urged the UN chief to focus on protecting civilians and addressing the root causes of violence and human rights abuses. While full details of the deal have not been made public, it reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz for global oil shipments, offering Iran economic incentives if it meets certain conditions, and launching talks on its nuclear programme. The agreement has drawn skepticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, pro-Israel groups and Israeli officials, many of whom question whether it is practical or capable of producing meaningful progress. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Trump, said the ultimate goal should be ending Iran’s uranium enrichment activities but acknowledged uncertainty over whether negotiators could achieve that objective. Experts say reaching a nuclear agreement requires sustained diplomatic engagement and technical expertise. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka for Moulvibazar on Wednesday morning to attend two family card distribution programmes and a political meeting. He arrived at Sylhet Osmani International Airport from Dhaka at around 10:20am as part of his visit to Moulvibazar, said Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony. Political leaders from Sylhet division and senior government officials stationed in Sylhet received the Prime Minister at the airport. After a brief exchange of greetings with the leaders present, he left for Moulvibazar by road, Rony said. According to the programme schedule, Tarique Rahman will inaugurate a family card distribution programme at the historic Victoria High School ground in Sreemangal at 1:00pm. Under the programme, family cards will be distributed among 155 families in Ward No. 1 of Mirzapur Union in Sreemangal upazila. At 2:30pm, the Prime Minister will attend another family card distribution programme at Moulvibazar Government High School ground, where 152 families in Ward No. 7 of Tengra Union in Rajnagar upazila will receive family cards. Later in the afternoon, he will travel to DuSai Resort to attend a meeting with party leaders before leaving for Sylhet for his return journey to Dhaka. After spending more than one and a half decades in London, Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25 last year. He previously visited Moulvibazar during the election campaign on January 22. This is his first visit to the district as Prime Minister since the BNP secured a majority in the national election.

A spell of rain often brings more worry than relief for the students of Gobindaganj Government Primary School in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj. Just an hour of continuous rainfall is enough to leave the school compound submerged, disrupting classes and turning the daily journey to school into a challenge for hundreds of children. Located in Chhatak’s Gobindaganj area, the school has been grappling with severe waterlogging for years.  Students said the playground, walkways and areas surrounding classrooms go underwater after even moderate rainfall, creating an unhealthy environment and hampering academic activities. The school currently serves 467 students under the supervision of one head teacher and nine assistant teachers.  However, recurring waterlogging has made regular attendance and classroom activities increasingly difficult. A recent visit to the school revealed stagnant rainwater covering much of the playground. Mud and scattered waste mixed with the water, creating slippery and unhygienic conditions.  Many students were seen carrying their shoes in their hands while wading through muddy water to reach their classrooms. Others had no choice but to sit through lessons in wet clothes. Teachers say the situation not only disrupts lessons but also affects students’ concentration and overall learning experience. “My daughter studies in Class One. Whenever it rains, she does not want to go to school,” said guardian Nilima Nasrin. “Even after an hour of rainfall, water enters the classroom premises. It is ruining the learning environment for young children.” Parents and local residents blame the problem on the absence of an effective drainage system.  They fear that prolonged waterlogging could expose children to waterborne diseases, skin infections and mosquito-borne illnesses. According to locals, the institution has been suffering from the same problem for years. They allege that inadequate drainage infrastructure and the dumping of waste around the school premises have worsened the situation over time. Head teacher Mostak Ahmed said the situation becomes particularly difficult during the rainy season. “Rainwater frequently enters the school compound and reaches the classrooms. Conducting classes under such conditions is extremely challenging,” he said. “The problem has intensified because waste materials have been dumped around the school, blocking the natural flow of water.” The issue has drawn the attention of local education authorities. Upazila Primary Education Officer Mohammad Shahjahan Ahmed said he had been informed about rainwater entering the school premises. “We have heard about the situation. We will investigate the matter and take necessary steps accordingly,” he said. Chhatak Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohi Uddin also assured action. “We will look into the matter and discuss it with the relevant authorities to find a solution,” he said. As the monsoon season gains momentum, parents, teachers and residents hope that promises of action will soon translate into tangible improvements, ensuring that rainfall no longer stands between children and their education.

Dhaka ranked 24th among the world’s most polluted cities on Wednesday morning, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 123 at 09:09 am. The air quality was classified as ‘moderate’, indicating the air may pose a moderate health concern for a small number of unusually sensitive individuals, such as people with asthma or other respiratory issues, according to the AQI scale. Santhiago in Chile, Lahore in Pakistan, and Jakarta in Indonesia occupied the first, second, and third spot with AQI scores of 172, 163, and 158 respectively. According to AQI standards, a reading between 101 and 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, 151 to 200 ‘unhealthy’, 201 to 300 ‘very unhealthy’, while levels above 301 are deemed ‘hazardous’, posing serious health risks. The AQI, which provides daily updates on air quality, indicates how clean or polluted the air is and highlights potential health impacts.In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five major pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. Iran's top diplomat on Tuesday said any agreement to end the war with the United States would require Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon, a condition already rejected by Israel and one that could jeopardize efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire. The proposed agreement between Washington and Tehran has not yet been made public, and officials involved have at times offered differing interpretations of its terms. Although Israel is not a party to the deal, it has been directly involved in the conflict after joining US strikes against Iran on Feb. 28. Israel has also been engaged in fighting with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon and has taken control of large areas in the country's south. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Israel's continued presence in southern Lebanon would violate the spirit of the agreement. "Without the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territories they occupied during this war, the war has not fully come to an end," Araghchi said. However, a US official familiar with the framework of the agreement said it does not include any requirement for Israel to leave Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also reiterated on Monday that Israeli forces would remain there "as long as necessary." Previous attempts to end the conflict have been hindered by similar disagreements, resulting in a fragile ceasefire that failed to evolve into a permanent peace arrangement. The uncertainty has also affected the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments, which remains effectively closed. At least two Iranian oil tankers left the country on Tuesday and crossed the US naval blockade without interference, according to shipping-tracking data. The vessels marked Iran's first crude oil exports in two months. Shipping-monitoring service TankerTrackers.com said the Iranian-flagged tankers Diona and Hero II were carrying a combined 3.8 million barrels of crude oil. US Central Command declined to comment. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday initiated the necessary process to bring back former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who was recently arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), under the existing prisoner transfer framework. ACC Deputy Director Aktarul Islam confirmed the development to journalists. According to ACC officials, the required documents have already been handed over to Bangladesh’s National Central Bureau (NCB), which is coordinating the extradition process with the relevant authorities. As part of the legal and diplomatic efforts, two representatives of the NCB) visited the ACC headquarters on Tuesday and held discussions with ACC officials regarding the ongoing cases against Benazir Ahmed, arrest warrants issued by the courts, judicial orders, and other necessary documentation. ACC officials said details of the corruption and illicit wealth accumulation cases filed against the former police chief, along with court orders and supporting documents, have been provided to the NCB. The documents will be sent through diplomatic channels via the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the concerned authorities in the UAE. The extradition efforts are being pursued under the bilateral extradition arrangement and international legal cooperation mechanisms, officials added. Earlier, Home Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed informed Parliament on Sunday that UAE police arrested Benazir Ahmed on June 12 and that he is currently in custody there. Under UAE federal law, a formal extradition request must be submitted through diplomatic channels within 30 days of the arrest. Relevant government agencies are now preparing the required documents to meet the deadline. Benazir Ahmed, a former police chief, is facing multiple cases involving corruption, money laundering, and passport forgery. An Interpol Red Notice was issued against him on April 11, 2025, following a request from Bangladesh Police Headquarters. He was reportedly arrested on June 12 while transiting through Dubai International Airport after arriving from London. Authorities allegedly identified his location through an artificial intelligence-based surveillance system, leading to his detention.

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal will hold a protest march in the capital on Wednesday against what it described as propaganda and conspiracies. The programme will be organised by Dhaka South Jubo Dal as part of a centrally announced programme of the organisation. The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Tuesday and signed by Minhazul Islam Bhuiyan, joint general secretary (office) of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal central executive committee. According to the programme, the march will begin at 4:30 pm in front of the organisation’s central office at Naya Paltan and proceed towards Shahbagh. Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna, General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayon MP and other central leaders are expected to participate in the programme.

Dr Moudud Hossain Alamgir has been elected president of the new executive committee of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) for 2026. All candidates for the committee's posts were elected unopposed in the election held on Tuesday. The newly elected committee will serve for the next two years after assuming office. The results were formally announced by the BCPS Election Commission. The information was confirmed in a notification signed by Election Commissioner Prof Kohinoor Begum. According to the notification, Dr Nuruddin Ahmad was elected senior vice-president, Dr Lutful Aziz vice-president, Dr Sehrin Farhad Siddika treasurer and Dr Imtiaz Faruk secretary. Dr Kazi Din Mohammad was elected as Member (1) of the executive committee. The Election Commission said no nomination paper was submitted for the post of Member (2). As per the rules, a fresh election will be held later for the vacant position.

A security guard died after being electrocuted while picking mangoes from a tree in the capital's Panthapath area on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Abu Raihan, 28, son of Jamal Uddin of Bauler Char area in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh. He had been living with his family in the Panthapath area. According to Mamtazur Rahman, who took him to hospital, Raihan worked as a security guard for AVP Company. He said Raihan came into contact with an electric wire and lost consciousness while picking mangoes from a tree at his workplace. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the doctor on duty at the emergency department declared him dead after examination. Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death citing the attending physician. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue and the matter has been reported to the concerned police station, he said.

Yum Brands has agreed to sell Pizza Hut for a combined $2.7 billion, ending its ownership of the iconic pizza chain as the company seeks to focus on higher-performing brands amid declining sales at Pizza Hut. The parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut announced Tuesday that private equity firm LongRange Capital will acquire Pizza Hut’s operations outside mainland China for approximately $1.5 billion. Pizza Hut’s mainland China business will be purchased by Yum China Holdings for about $1.2 billion. China is the chain’s second-largest market after the United States, accounting for nearly one-fifth of global sales. Yum Brands began reviewing strategic options for Pizza Hut last November after the chain continued to lag behind the company’s other restaurant brands. While Yum’s global sales increased 5 percent last year, Pizza Hut recorded a 2 percent decline. Earlier this year, Yum announced plans to shut down 250 Pizza Hut outlets in the United States. At the end of last year, the brand operated nearly 20,000 restaurants worldwide. Director General for Asia and the Pacific at Federal Foreign Office of Germany Frank Hartmann has said Germany and Europe are willing and eager to engage more with Bangladesh and get to know the country better. “To that end, I would like to invite our Bangladeshi counterparts to come visit us in Germany,” he said reflecting on his recent visit to Bangladesh. With a packed two-day itinerary, Hartmann and Head of the South Asia Division Steffen Koch engaged with representatives from the government of Bangladesh, civil society organisations, the private sector, diplomatic missions and more, said the German Embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday. The two senior officials from Germany’s Federal Foreign Office (FFO) visited Bangladesh from June 9 to 11. “This is my first visit to Bangladesh. I had very good talks to political and economic leaders here, as well as civil society organizations. Bangladesh has gone through a difficult political transition in recent years, but it led to a successful outcome of a new democratically elected government,” Hartmann said. “Visits like these open doors for deepened collaboration between Germany and Bangladesh,” said German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz. “It was an honour to host Hartmann and Koch and accompany them on their engagements throughout this trip. I hope Bangladesh’s beauty, hospitality and immense potential will inspire our guests from Berlin to visit again,” he said.

A court in Cumilla on Tuesday sent Jisan Ahmed Pradhan, expelled assistant secretary for international affairs of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, to jail in connection with a case filed over rape and forced miscarriage. He was produced before the Judge of Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-3 Tayeb Uddin Ahmed around 5:30pm under tight security. Following a hearing, the court ordered that he be sent to jail, said Court Police Inspector Mamunur Rashid. His lawyer Monir Hossain told reporters that they filed an application seeking court order to provide him with treatment at hospital considering his physical condition. However, after the hearing, the court sent him to jail. Earlier, Jisan’s family claimed that he was rescued from the Laksam Railway Junction area on Friday night, a day after he reportedly went missing from Daudkandi in Cumilla. He was later admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for treatment. Following news of his rescue, a woman filed a case at Daudkandi Model Police Station on Friday night under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, naming Jisan and three others as accused. In the case statement, the woman alleged that she had been raped multiple times and that her pregnancy was forcibly terminated.

Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Geneva Nahida Sobhan, on Tuesday said Bangladesh remains proud to champion social justice, multilateralism, the democratization of global labour governance, and a ‘Culture of Peace’ within the United Nations system and beyond. In a speech that resonated across the conference hall, Ambassador Sobhan reminded delegates that without peace, there can be no social justice. “Peace remains the most fundamental precondition for decent work,” she said while speaking at the closing session of the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC). The Ambassador spoke in her capacity as Vice-President of the Government Group of the Conference. The ILC is the world’s largest gathering focused on the world of work, bringing together more than 5,000 delegates from 187 countries. She called for a more democratic and representative ILO, human-centred governance of artificial intelligence, greater focus on job creation and decent work, stronger support for developing and least-developed countries, and a global Culture of Peace among workers, employers, and governments. Drawing inspiration from the Albert Thomas Monument in Geneva, she reminded the Conference that “labour is not a commodity.” In one of the most memorable moments of the Conference, she highlighted a stark global paradox: “We spend more than USD 350 per person on guns and bullets, yet fail to provide even USD 2 a day to millions living in poverty or searching for work.” Ambassador Sobhan has become the first Bangladeshi to be elected Vice-President of the International Labour Conference (ILC), representing the Government Group of the ILO’s Member States.

President of the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) Abdulhadi Turus has highlighted the huge potential of the youth in Bangladesh and reaffirmed YTB’s commitment to supporting Bangladeshi students and young professionals through scholarships, training, and leadership programmes. Ambassador of Bangladesh to Türkiye Amanul Haq called on Abdulhadi Turus in Ankara on Monday when they discussed expanding cooperation in education, youth development, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connectivity. Ambassador Haq appreciated YTB's continued support for Bangladeshi students and proposed increasing scholarship opportunities, as many Bangladeshi students are now interested in studying in Türkiye, and establishing a formal framework of cooperation through a memorandum of understanding, said the Bangladesh Embassy in Türkiye. In a milestone initiative to preserve Bangladesh's cultural heritage and modernise its labour-intensive handloom industry, the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA) has validated a comprehensive competency standard to develop highly skilled artisans for Tangail Saree weaving. The validation workshop for the 'Tangail Saree Weaving (Level-2)' occupation’s Competency Standard (CS) and Course Accreditation Document (CAD)—developed under the Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework (BNQF)—concluded at the NSDA conference room in the capital on Tuesday. NSDA Executive Chairman (Secretary) Dr. Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury presided over the session. Abu Ahmed Siddique, NDC, Chairman (Additional Secretary) of the Bangladesh Handloom Board, and Mirza Nurul Ghani Shovon, Chairman of the Informal Sector Industry Skills Council (ISC), attended the event as special guests. Addressing the session, Dr. Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury stated that the NSDA is actively working to bring traditional, informal, and labour-intensive sectors under the umbrella of the national skills framework alongside modern technology-driven professions. "The newly developed competency standards and course accreditation for Tangail Saree weaving will expand skill development, official recognition, and formal employment opportunities for the workers in this historic sector," she said. The NSDA chief revealed that over the last 10 months, the authority has developed and reviewed 85 demand-driven competency standards and training curricula across various sectors. This includes structural training frameworks for traditional crafts like Jamdani and Tangail sarees to protect cultural identity and maximize export potential. Highlighting the global success of the national certification system, Dr. Chowdhury disclosed that according to the NSDA tracking system, workers holding the National Skills Certificate (NSC) have successfully secured employment in 58 countries. Additionally, the framework has facilitated domestic employment for nearly 70,000 certificate holders and helped create over 20,000 new entrepreneurs. To expand international market reach, she mentioned that the NSDA is initiating Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) and joint certifications with foreign institutions, including Saudi Arabia's Takamol, Japan's Technogram and Nexus Group, and Australia's TAFE. Furthermore, to cater to global labor market demands, six country-specific competency standards targeting South Korea, the USA, Japan, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia have recently been introduced along with Japanese and English language curricula. The NSDA is also moving toward issuing digitalized certificates featuring QR codes and digital signatures to enhance global acceptability. Special Guest Abu Ahmed Siddique termed the standardisation a vital milestone for the country's weaving community. He announced that the Bangladesh Handloom Board will soon register its Tangail-based training institute with the NSDA to formally roll out the specialized Tangail Saree weaving courses. Industry representatives, textile experts, academics, and senior government officials attended the workshop to finalize the curriculum, which analysts believe will significantly scale up productivity, product quality, and the global competitive edge of traditional Bangladeshi apparel.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a ground officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines for allegedly assisting three passengers in travelling to Italy using fake Schengen visas through a human trafficking network. The arrested official, Mohammad Akhlasur Rahman, was detained from Jamalpur on Tuesday morning, CID's Special Superintendent (SS) of Police Badrul Alam Molla told a press briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Malibagh. According to CID, the three passengers left Dhaka for Italy on May 26 on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight. Two of them—Mostafizur Rahman Anik and Akshay Chandra Das—were detected with forged Schengen visas upon arrival at Rome airport and were subsequently sent back to Bangladesh. A third passenger managed to clear immigration in Italy, but CID did not disclose his identity. After the two passengers were repatriated, questioning by different agencies on May 28 revealed information about a trafficking network that had arranged their travel. A case was later filed with Airport Police Station on May 30, leading to the investigation and arrest of the Biman official. CID said the passengers initially obtained boarding passes for a Nepal-bound flight, which did not require visas, and completed immigration formalities using those passes. However, their names were not included in the passenger manifest of the Nepal bound flight. Based on an analysis of CCTV footage from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, investigators found that after getting the Nepal boarding passes, the passengers exited through a staff gate and went to the car parking area, where they allegedly received Italy-bound boarding passes, tickets and forged visas from another individual. The passengers later returned, completed immigration procedures using the Nepal boarding passes and, at one stage, entered a washroom area outside CCTV coverage, where the fake Schengen visas were attached to their passports, CID said. Investigators alleged that Akhlasur assisted the passengers in passing through the INS gate, the final checkpoint before boarding the Italy-bound flight. Since their immigration clearance had been obtained using Nepal-bound boarding passes, the INS gate was the remaining barrier before boarding, CID officials said. Upon arrival in Italy, immigration authorities detected the forged visas of two passengers and returned them to Bangladesh. Badrul Alam said three people have been named in the case, including another Biman official.  He said those found involved during the investigation would be arrested in phases. He also said Akhlasur had verbally admitted his involvement in the incident, though investigators were still examining whether he had links to similar cases. The CID official pointed to a lack of coordination between airlines and immigration authorities regarding passenger manifests and boarding pass verification, describing it as a factor behind the incident.  He added that law enforcement would take action against anyone involved in human trafficking or migrant smuggling, regardless of their institutional affiliation.

Treasury bench lawmakers on Tuesday strongly defended the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2026-27, describing it as people-oriented and welfare-focused, while dismissing opposition criticism as unfounded during a lively debate in Parliament. Participating in the budget discussion, ruling party MPs praised the proposed budget and thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for what they termed a pro-people fiscal plan aimed at ensuring inclusive development. The debate saw sharp exchanges between treasury and opposition lawmakers over taxation, revenue targets and the overall direction of the budget. Opposition MPs argued that the revenue collection target set in the proposed budget was overly ambitious and warned that the burden of taxation on the middle class will increase. Responding to the criticism, BNP lawmaker Shariful Alam from Kishoreganj-6 said the opposition is criticising the budget merely for the sake of criticism. “The budget has increased taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, and that is perhaps why they do not like it,” he said. Reserved seat BNP MP Momtaj Alo also expressed frustration over the opposition’s stance, saying they were focusing only on selected aspects of the budget while ignoring its broader benefits. The discussion also featured a debate on the country’s road infrastructure. After an opposition MP raised concerns about dilapidated roads, BNP reserved seat member Zeeba Amina Khan blamed corruption during the previous administration for the current condition. Speaking largely in English during her 11-minute speech, she said, “The roads are in a very, very bad situation. This is due to corruption that you have seen from the previous regime.” Her remarks, which included occasional Bengali expressions, later attracted attention and humourous reactions on social media. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami MP Md Moktar Ali from Jashore-6 also delivered his speech in English, arguing that the proposed budget will increase the tax burden on citizens. Another Jamaat lawmaker, Md Abdus Sattar, criticised the budget, saying high inflation and ambitious revenue collection targets could place additional pressure on consumers through indirect taxation. He warned that opportunities to legalise undisclosed money remained in the budget and echoed economists’ concerns about potential risks and negative impacts on the economy. During his speech, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad intervened and asked the MP to refrain from using inappropriate expressions. The Speaker subsequently ordered an objectionable colloquial term to be expunged from the parliamentary record. Independent MP AZM Rezwanul Haque, elected after failing to secure a BNP nomination, praised the budget but proposed reductions in certain taxes. BNP MP Md Maminul Haque said the budget reflected the core commitments outlined in the BNP’s election manifesto. Another BNP lawmaker Mohammad Abu Sufian claimed the proposed budget was accepted by Parliament, the public and the international community. He noted that unlike previous years, prices of essential commodities did not go up immediately after the budget announcement. He also highlighted reductions in source taxes on around 60 essential items, including rice, wheat, potatoes, fish, onions, garlic, edible oil and sugar. Responding to opposition criticism, BNP reserved seat member Nipun Roy Chowdhury described the budget as a roadmap for building a non-discriminatory and welfare-oriented state.  

Dozens of students walked out of Stanford University's graduation ceremony as Google CEO Sundar Pichai took the stage to deliver the keynote address. Video footage recorded by the BBC showed students leaving the event in protest against Google's controversial work with the US government. The demonstration was encouraged by a group called Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine. The protest follows other recent campus demonstrations targeting technology leaders, although many of those have focused on artificial intelligence and concerns about its impact on jobs. During his speech, Pichai largely avoided discussing AI, though he appeared to joke about the anticipated protests. "People thought it would be really difficult for me," he said. "It is the last two letters of my last name, after all." Pichai, a Stanford alumnus, did not respond to the BBC's request for comment. The exact number of students who participated in the walkout remains unclear, but local news outlet SFGate estimated that as many as 200 students may have left the ceremony. Some students carried signs as they exited. One sign read, "ICE spies with Google AI," while others waved Palestinian flags. The Stanford chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) organized the walkout and urged students to protest Google's connections with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Israel. It remains unclear whether all of the students who left the ceremony were protesting for the same reasons. This year's protests against graduation speakers in the United States have also highlighted growing concerns among students about artificial intelligence. Speakers who discuss AI are increasingly facing negative reactions from audiences on college campuses. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was booed by students during his commencement address at the University of Arizona in May after speaking about the rise of AI, reflecting growing worries about its impact on employment. "I know what many of you are feeling about that. I can hear you," Schmidt told graduates as boos echoed through the venue during remarks comparing today's AI boom to the rise of computers four decades ago. A similar reaction greeted real estate executive Gloria Caulfield at the University of Central Florida. "The rise of artificial intelligence is the next industrial revolution," she said as members of the audience booed. US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would continue efforts to help end the war in Ukraine and urged Russia to reach a peace agreement, following what he described as a “very good” meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. Speaking to reporters, Trump said too many young people were being killed in the conflict and stressed the need for a negotiated settlement. “Russia should make a deal,” Trump said, adding that he would do whatever possible to help bring the war to an end. Zelenskyy joined leaders of the Group of Seven nations — the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan — as well as European Union representatives for discussions focused on Ukraine and regional security. The Ukrainian president also held talks with Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the summit in Evian-les-Bains near the Swiss border. Following the meeting, Zelenskyy said discussions centred on strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and advancing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s invasion. In a post on X, he said Ukraine had secured important commitments from G7 partners, including additional air defence missiles, licences for local production of defence systems, a winter support package and increased pressure on Russia. Zelenskyy also said the United States had expressed readiness to provide support for those initiatives. “It is key that everything discussed be implemented. Russia must understand that its war will never be normalised,” he said, thanking allies for their continued support. European officials described the discussions as constructive. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine had demonstrated resilience on the battlefield and argued that international support should be strengthened further. “The situation in 2026 is very different from 2025. Ukraine is bravely holding the frontline, while signs of Russian fatigue are becoming more visible,” she said. The government has decided to develop a seamless and time-efficient rail communication network across the country, aiming to modernise Bangladesh’s railway system. The decision was taken at a meeting on the future planning of Bangladesh Railway held on Tuesday morning at the Cabinet Division’s Public Administration Room at the Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Briefing reporters, Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said the meeting discussed both medium- and long-term development plans for the railway sector. “Detailed discussions were held on the modernisation of Bangladesh Railway, including phased conversion of metre-gauge lines from Panchagarh to Cox’s Bazar into broad-gauge lines and upgrading the signalling system,” he said. Shiplu also said issues related to financing of these plans were discussed at the meeting, with the Prime Minister giving necessary directives. Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister Habibur Rashid, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Railways Secretary Md Fahimul Islam, and Director General of Bangladesh Railway Afzal Hossain, among others, were present.

Holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), will be observed in the country on June 26 as the Muharram moon was sighted in Bangladesh sky on Tuesday. The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held at the conference room of Islamic Foundation's Baitul Mukarram office with Additional Religious Affairs Secretary Md Fazlur Rahman in the chair, according to a press release. Holy Ashura is observed on 10th of Muharram in the Hijri year commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SM). On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) along with his family members and 72 followers embraced the martyrdom in the hands of soldiers of Yazid at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).

Global rating agency Fitch Ratings on Tuesday said that achieving the revenue target outlined in Bangladesh's proposed national budget for the fiscal year FY2026-27 will be highly challenging and risks being derailed by structural weaknesses. According to a fresh commentary published by the international credit rating agency, the country’s long-standing weaknesses in tax collection combined with slow reform implementation present significant downside risks to hitting the projected fiscal milestones. The report noted that the new budget aims to elevate Bangladesh's revenue-to-GDP ratio to 10.2 percent, up from approximately 8 percent estimated for the outgoing fiscal year 2025-26. If fully realized, this would mark the highest revenue-to-GDP ratio achieved by the country since 1993. Fitch identified the proper execution of the tax collection mechanism as the primary near-term fiscal challenge for the next financial year. This comes as the proposed budget expands state expenditure by 19 percent, while concurrently setting an ambitious 18 percent year-on-year growth target for nominal revenue. The global agency acknowledged that structural measures embedded in the budget—such as streamlining the tax filing process, trimming extensive tax exemptions, easing VAT compliance for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and ramping up non-tax revenue from state-owned enterprises—could potentially broaden the tax base in the long term. "However, past performance indicates that weak implementation capacity has historically undermined many of Bangladesh’s similar reform initiatives," Fitch noted in its evaluation. The rating agency also flagged concerns over the high expenditure commitments built into the budget, pointing out that social safety nets and infrastructure sectors have been allocated 29.7 percent and 18.7 percent of the total budget respectively. While this reflects the newly elected government’s core political priorities, it places intense pressure on achieving the revenue target. Fitch, however, highlighted that Bangladesh historically retains a pattern of under-spending its budgetary allocations. In the event of a revenue shortfall, this structural under-spending could ultimately act as a buffer to keep the fiscal deficit contained. Consequently, Fitch maintained its financial deficit forecast for Bangladesh at 3.6 percent of GDP for FY2026-27, aligning with the government's target, but based on a calculation of lower revenue matched by lower expenditure. Terming the government's economic growth projections as "overly optimistic," Fitch projected a real GDP growth of just 3.5 percent for FY2026-27, heavily contrasting the state target of 6.5 percent. The agency attributed its conservative forecast to a fragile banking sector, weak credit growth in the private sector, policy vulnerabilities, and an uncertain global environment. On a positive note, Fitch lauded some of the government's latest initiatives in the energy sector. It observed that prioritizing domestic natural gas exploration, enhancing efficiency in power generation and distribution, and reinforcing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure could significantly bolster medium-term economic growth if executed flawlessly.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday called for an end to what he described as a “mentality of revenge”, urging all to focus on the interest of the country and its people rather than retaliation. Speaking at a view-exchange meeting with journalists covering the BNP beat at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital, he said at present, there is no environment in Bangladesh for muzzling the media, and sought cooperation from journalists in addressing social challenges. “Let us try to change our mindset a little. If something happened to me, taking revenge will not bring it back or make things as they were before. We should move away from that mindset and think about what we can do for the country, for society, and for people,” the Prime Minister said. “Whether we succeed or not is a different matter… but at least we can try. Success is a different issue. With this mindset, why shouldn’t we move forward?” he said. Tarique Rahman also spoke emotionally about his past experiences, saying he endured both physical and mental hardship during imprisonment. “I came from prison. I was physically and mentally tortured. I can say many things about who is responsible for what, but that is not the point now,” he said.

Bangladesh has continued to log an impressive growth in inward remittances, with expatriates sending home over US$ 34.38 billion during the period from July 2025 to June 15, 2026.  This marks an 18.61 percent growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year FY 2025-26. According to the latest data from Bangladesh Bank released today (Tuesday), the total remittance inflow reached $ 34.38 billion during the current fiscal year (up to June 15, 2026), compared to $ 28.98 billion received during the same period of FY2024-25. The data shows that on June 15 alone, expatriate Bangladeshis remitted US$ 82.55 million through official banking channels. Furthermore, the remittance inflow during the first 15 days of June 2026 reached US$ 1.62 billion up from $ 1.47 billion recorded during the first half of June 2025. This reflects a healthy month-on-month growth of 9.73 percent. Banking sector officials noted that the steady and robust inflow of remittances has heavily shored up the country's external sector performance and financial stability ahead of the conclusion of the fiscal year. Foreign Exchange Reserves Position: Backed by strong remittance channels and recent external funding, the country’s foreign exchange reserves have shown a strong upward position. According to the central bank's financial account data as of June 16, 2026: Gross Forex Reserves stood at $35.76 billion. BPM6 standard reserves recorded at $31.21 billion on today (Tuesday) June 16,2026. The Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6) format, mandated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), represents the immediately usable liquid reserves of the central bank. Central bank officials indicated that the current reserve position leaves the country in a comfortable position to cover more than five to six months of regular import bills, significantly boosting macroeconomic stability and stabilizing the domestic foreign exchange market.

Mir Nadia Nivin, an international development and institutional reform specialist, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA). With this appointment, she makes history as the first female chairperson of the country's insurance sector regulatory body since its inception. The Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance issued an official gazette notification on Tuesday making the appointment for a three-year tenure. An alumnus of Harvard University, Nivin possesses an extensive professional background in global governance. She previously served as a member of the Election Reform Commission during the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. Between 2020 and 2023, she held key high-level portfolios at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) across Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Malaysia. In 2019, Nivin was named in the prestigious 'Asia 21 Young Leaders' list by the US-based Asia Society, which recognizes exceptional achievers under the age of 40 across 39 Asian countries. Prior to joining the United Nations, she taught at BRAC University in Dhaka and also worked in journalism for a brief period. Since beginning its official journey on January 11, 2011, IDRA has been headed by five chairmen. Actuary M. Shefaque Ahmed served as the founding chairman for two consecutive terms spanning six years. He was followed by former Financial Institutions Division Secretary Shafiqur Rahman Patwari, who successfully completed a three-year regular term. Ayesha Begum, the mother of Premier Bank PLC Managing Director Md Monzur Mofiz, died on Tuesday due to old-age complications. She was 78. She breathed her last at her Bakalia residence in Chattogram city, according to a press release. Ayesha Begum is survived by two sons, two daughters and numerous relatives. Meanwhile, the Premier Bank family expressed deep shock at her death. They prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Jahangirnagar University (JU) has expelled two female students for two years after finding them guilty of possessing and consuming narcotics in a room at Nawab Faizunnesa Hall. The university also permanently expelled them from the residential hall and recommended filing a criminal case against one of them. Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman announced the decisions while briefing reporters after a Syndicate meeting early Tuesday at the university's administrative building. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan chaired the meeting. The expelled students are Tanuja Tithi,  51st-batch student of the Management Studies Department, and Sanzida Amir Inisi, 48th-batch student of the Department of Drama and Dramatics. University authorities formed an investigation committee after reports of narcotics possession and consumption in Room 116 of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall. The investigation found that both students had violated the Jahangirnagar University Discipline Ordinance-2018, which strictly prohibits the possession, consumption and trading of any kind of narcotics on the university campus, including academic departments, institutes and residential halls. Based on the findings, the university's Disciplinary Board expelled both students from the university for two years and permanently barred them from staying in any residential hall. The board also recommended filing a criminal case against Tanuja Tithi under the relevant laws. On April 18, hall authorities recovered narcotics during a raid on Room 116 of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall. The room had been allocated to Tanuja Tithi, while Sanzida Amir Inisi was present there during the raid.

The United States and Iran have electronically signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending their 109-day conflict, with US President Donald Trump saying the Strait of Hormuz would be fully reopened by Friday, although significant uncertainties remain over the agreement’s implementation and long-term prospects. According to US officials quoted by international media, the agreement was electronically signed by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s chief negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The MoU comes after more than three months of hostilities triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran, with fighting extending to multiple fronts across the region, including Lebanon. While the full text of the agreement has not been made public, officials from both sides have provided differing accounts of its provisions. Iran’s National Security Council said the agreement would halt hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, and end the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. Follow-up negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief are expected to begin during a 60-day period following a formal signing ceremony scheduled in Switzerland on Friday. Trump said the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route, would be “open to all” once the agreement takes effect, while Vance said no tolls would be imposed on vessels using the waterway during the negotiation period. However, conflicting statements have emerged regarding economic concessions. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Washington had agreed to release $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets and temporarily ease sanctions on Iranian oil exports. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam on Tuesday said inter-district bus terminals in the capital will not be relocated immediately, adding that buses will instead be kept at depots outside the city and allowed to enter terminals shortly before departure. “Buses will be kept at designated depots outside the city and will come to the terminals only shortly before departure. Terminals are meant for passenger boarding, not long-hour parking,” he said while speaking at a press briefing at the Press Information Department (PID) conference room in Dhaka. His comments came a day after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the authorities concerned to relocate Dhaka’s four major inter-district bus terminals – Fulbaria-Gulistan, Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Sayedabad-Jatrabari – swiftly to help ease chronic traffic congestion. Explaining the government's plan, Rabiul said many buses currently remain parked at terminals for 12 to 24 hours, contributing to traffic congestion and operational disorder. “We want buses to stay at designated depots and come to the terminals only shortly before the departure. Terminals should be used for passenger boarding, not for parking buses for hours or days,” he said. The Mohakhali Bus Terminal will remain operational for the time being, although a decision has been taken to acquire around 50 bighas of land at Uttara for its permanent relocation, the minister said. “Buses scheduled for departure will continue to use Mohakhali terminal, but vehicles waiting for their next trips for extended periods will not be allowed to remain there,” he said. An interim depot site has already been identified near the Purbachal Expressway (300-foot Road) where buses can be stationed until their scheduled departures, he said. Referring to the Sayedabad Bus Terminal, Rabiul said preparations are underway to establish a temporary facility at Kanchpur in Narayanganj. “The terminal will eventually be shifted there once adequate facilities are in place. Until then, buses will use the nearby depot and only enter the terminal during designated departure times,” he added. The minister stressed that all major terminals will eventually be relocated, but the process will be carried out gradually rather than overnight. Responding to a question regarding the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to China and the possibility of signing agreements, he said discussions will focus on projects that serve Bangladesh’s national interests and economic priorities. “China has shown interest in investing in railways, roads and waterways. We are reviewing a number of proposals and evaluating them based on their economic viability, development benefits and alignment with Bangladesh’s interests,” Rabiul said. Several infrastructure projects have already attracted positive interest from China and that any future agreements will be concluded only if they safeguard the interests and benefits of both countries, he added. “We will consider proposals that contribute to our development goals, strengthen technological capacity and ensure mutual benefits.”

Local residents say the initiative was led by Gulam Kibria Maksud, a transport businessman and owner of “Makshim Travels” as well as a devoted Argentina supporter. A lifelong football enthusiast, he decided to decorate his entire house and inspire others to join in the celebration of his favourite team. His blue-and-white painted residence, adorned with Argentina-themed designs, now closely resembles a football fan zone. From a distance, the house appears like a carefully crafted replica of Argentina’s jersey, symbolising deep emotional attachment to the team. “I have supported Argentina since childhood. I wanted to bring football fever closer to people and share the joy of the game,” Maksud said. After decorating my house, I noticed that locals and visitors were coming to take photos and share moments on social media. The response has been overwhelming, he said. Inspired by his initiative, several members of his family and neighbours have also joined in decorating their homes with Argentina flags and colours. The trend has quickly spread, turning the locality into a visual attraction for football lovers.  

An elderly woman was killed after being hit by a bus in Chandpur Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Tofayelennesa Maya, 64, wife of late Belal Patwari of Patwari Bari in the Forest Department area of the upazila. According to locals, Maya was walking along the road when a Cumilla-bound Boogdad Paribahan bus from Chandpur struck her in the Forest Department area on the Chandpur-Cumilla highway, leaving her injured. She died shortly afterwards, said her daughter Shahina Akter. She said Maya used to take morning walk along the road every day and was on her regular walk when the accident happened. Inspector (Investigation) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Mintu Dutta said the bus sped away after the accident.  

A police inspector of Savar Model Police Station has now been withdrawn over allegations of links with drug dealers. Inspector (Operations) Helal Uddin has been attached to the Dhaka district police lines following allegations of maintaining close ties with drug traders in the Rajashan area of Savar and involvement in irregularities related to narcotics cases, police sources said. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Dhaka Md Jahangir Alam confirmed the withdrawal, saying he was not aware of the reason behind the action. The latest action against the inspector comes amid ongoing scrutiny of officers at the police station over alleged links with drug dealers. Earlier, Officer-in-Charge Arman Ali of the police station was withdrawn in late May over allegations of negligence in arresting a top drug suspect, alleged association with him, and a deterioration in law and order in the area. Several other policemen from the station were also previously withdrawn over similar allegations. According to sources, on May 22, three journalists from Desh TV and SA TV went to collect news at the hideout of a top drug dealer named Shamim Reza in the Rajashan area. They were allegedly attacked and severely beaten by Shamim and his associates, leaving them injured. Although a case was filed at Savar Model Police Station naming 21 individuals, the then OC took no step to arrest them.

Jahangirnagar University (JU) has reduced the punishments of several former activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and acquitted others after reviewing disciplinary actions taken over attacks on students during the July Uprising. The university Syndicate took the decision at its meeting on Tuesday after reviewing appeals filed by 43 punished students. "Following the appeals, we reviewed the disciplinary decisions against 43 students individually," the Vice Chancellor told reporters after the meeting. Of the 21 students who had received permanent expulsion, the Syndicate acquitted five, reduced the punishment of eight to a two-year suspension and cut the penalty of another five to a one-year suspension. It upheld the permanent expulsion of the remaining three students. The Syndicate also reviewed 12 decisions cancelling academic certificates. It withdrew the penalty for five students, upheld one-year certificate cancellation for four students and maintained two-year certificate cancellation for the remaining three. Vice Chancellor said the Syndicate examined the allegations, appeal petitions and supporting documents before reaching its decisions. "Based on the evidence, we reduced some punishments while upholding others," he added. Asked about the identities of the students whose punishments were revised, Registrar and Syndicate Secretary ABM Azizur Rahman said the university had not yet received the final list from the concerned office. "We have yet to receive the detailed list. We will disclose the names after verifying them once the concerned office sends the documents," he added.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Tuesday cautioned a Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker against using indecent language during parliamentary proceedings, stressing that Parliament should remain free from offensive and vulgar expressions. While presiding over the budget discussion in the House, the Speaker intervened after Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJEI) lawmaker Md Abdus Sattar, elected from Nilphamari-1, used a colloquial expression containing a vulgar term while making a point through an analogy. “Honourable Member, please exercise caution while speaking in Parliament. We do not want any indecent or vulgar words to be uttered in this House,” the Speaker said. He further informed the House that certain objectionable expressions used by the MP had been expunged from the official parliamentary record. During his speech, Abdus Sattar attempted to illustrate his argument by recounting a conversation between a sieve and a needle. In the analogy, the needle points out a hole in the sieve, while the sieve responds by highlighting the many holes in the needle’s counterpart. As the MP narrated the story, he used a crude Bengali term referring to a person's buttocks, prompting immediate intervention from the Speaker after finishing his speech. After ordering the offensive words to be removed from the record, the Speaker reminded lawmakers to uphold the dignity and decorum of Parliament while participating in debates. The incident occurred during the ongoing discussion on the national budget in the Jatiya Sangsad.
