PM Tariq Rahman Directs Fast-Tracking of AI Camera Installation to Ease Dhaka Traffic
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has ordered the swift completion of AI camera installations across Dhaka to modernize the city's traffic framework and reduce gridlocks. The AI-based system, already deployed experimentally at 30 major crossings since mid-May, automatically tracks traffic violations to issue digital fines. The relocation of outdated vehicles from capital roads was also heavily emphasized during this third prime ministerial meeting on traffic management.
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has directed authorities concerned to swiftly complete the installation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras on roads to modernize traffic management and alleviate traffic congestion in the capital. The PM gave this instruction during a meeting held at the public administration room of the Cabinet Division at the Secretariat on Monday (June 15), as briefed to journalists by the Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon.
According to the Additional Press Secretary, this was the Prime Minister's third high-level meeting focused on Dhaka's traffic congestion. Beyond fast-tracking the AI camera installations, the meeting extensively discussed removing old and expired vehicles from the capital's streets, with the Prime Minister issuing necessary directives on the matter.
Significantly, the Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) initiated the experimental use of AI technology at various traffic points on May 7. These AI-based PTZ cameras are equipped with software capable of automatically detecting violations of the Road Transport Act-2018. By mid-last month, police reported installing these advanced cameras across 30 crucial traffic signal crossings in Dhaka. The system automatically identifies offending vehicles and issues digital lawsuits to the owners, which is progressively restoring order and reducing gridlocks.
The high-profile meeting was attended by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, State Minister Habibur Rashid Habib, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka North Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, Principal Secretary A B M Abdus Sattar, and other senior officials.
